  • Founded in 1988, Animal Blood Bank has introduced veterinary practitioners to transfusion medicine through its publication "Blood Banking for Every Hospital", its periodic catalog, articles in major magazines, conferences, personal appearances and computer communications. Our founder, Stan Carlin, DVM, began his concept of the first blood bank for animals after a tragic loss in surgery where he reflected that, for the lack of a ready blood supply, someones pet had passed on. He and his partner, Pat Kaufman (our Director) developed techniques and supplies, and raised an awareness of the lifesaving value of being prepared for a transfusion. Their accomplishments include: Development of a 100 ml multipurpose blood collection bag and collection sets Application of a neonate blood filter in small animal transfusion Commercial application of human blood banking techniques in veterinary medicine Development of specialty devices for transfusions that allow use of common blood banking techniques for any type of animal Development of client referral centers throughout the US and Canada so veterinarians who need blood in an emergency can often get it the same day Animal Blood Bank is the largest veterinary transfusion supply company in the world. Significant life saving contributions to veterinary medicine have been made through product development, adherence to high standards of production and working relationships with public and private organizations, shelters and the veterinary community at large. ABB works closely with other leaders in the field of veterinary transfusion medicine to help bring the veterinary community the most cutting edge technology available today. Pat Kaufman, BS, CPDT, our Director, is a founding member of the American Association of Veterinary Blood Banks, a past board member of the Association of Veterinary Hematology and Transfusion Medicine and an active member of the their Standards Committee, a member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, and a member of the American Association of Blood Banks. She is a contributing author to texts on veterinary transfusion medicine. She is a certified dog trainer and behaviorist.
