Animal Blood Bank Inc

http://www.animalbloodbank.com

Founded in 1988, Animal Blood Bank has introduced veterinary practitioners to transfusion medicine through its publication "Blood Banking for Every Hospital", its periodic catalog, articles in major magazines, conferences, personal appearances and computer communications. Our founder, Stan Carlin, DVM, began his concept of the first blood bank for animals after a tragic loss in surgery where he reflected that, for the lack of a ready blood supply, someones pet had passed on. He and his partner, Pat Kaufman (our Director) developed techniques and supplies, and raised an awareness of the lifesaving value of being prepared for a transfusion. Their accomplishments include: Development of a 100 ml multipurpose blood collection bag and collection sets Application of a neonate blood filter in small animal transfusion Commercial application of human blood banking techniques in veterinary medicine Development of specialty devices for transfusions that allow use of common blood banking techniques for any type of animal Development of client referral centers throughout the US and Canada so veterinarians who need blood in an emergency can often get it the same day Animal Blood Bank is the largest veterinary transfusion supply company in the world. Significant life saving contributions to veterinary medicine have been made through product development, adherence to high standards of production and working relationships with public and private organizations, shelters and the veterinary community at large. ABB works closely with other leaders in the field of veterinary transfusion medicine to help bring the veterinary community the most cutting edge technology available today. Pat Kaufman, BS, CPDT, our Director, is a founding member of the American Association of Veterinary Blood Banks, a past board member of the Association of Veterinary Hematology and Transfusion Medicine and an active member of the their Standards Committee, a member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, and a member of the American Association of Blood Banks. She is a contributing author to texts on veterinary transfusion medicine. She is a certified dog trainer and behaviorist.

The Blood Care Foundation

http://www.bloodcare.org.uk

BCF only delivers blood to the treating physician using trained couriers. This is to prevent delays, losses or, as may occur in some countries, the original blood being exchanged for local, unscreened blood. It is a sad fact that in some countries, blood provided by BCF is considered a high value item, to be sold to the highest bidder. When requested, the relevant blood centre packs the required units, which are collected by the courier and taken to the airport where he collects his flight tickets. Should an unexpected delay occur the courier has been trained to re-ice the transportation box, to ensure the blood remains between 2°-10°C whilst in his possession. The courier carries the blood as hand baggage and it never leaves his possession. When he arrives at the hospital where the patient is being treated, the blood remains in the transportation box until the transfusion takes place. This eliminates the risk of the blood being accidentally switched in the blood bank. After the transfusion, the courier returns with the empty blood bags, so that if a possible post transfusion problem occurs, BCF can properly investigate the quality of the blood supplied.

Hoxworth Blood Center

http://www.hoxworth.org

Hoxworth Blood Center is one of the oldest community blood centers in the country. Founded in December, 1938 by a Cincinnati surgeon, Dr. Paul I. Hoxworth (pictured at right), the blood bank was established as a not-for-profit organization operating under the auspices of the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Chapter of the American Red Cross. As World War II began to draw to a close, the American Red Cross turned the blood bank over to the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine in 1944. However, the Red Cross became involved with the UC Blood Transfusion Service again during the Korean War. The blood center was renamed for its founder in 1973. In those early days, the blood bank was a one-room laboratory located in the basement of General Hospital. The staff consisted of Dr. Hoxworth's wife and three technicians. Dr. Hoxworth and other hospital doctors donated their services. The blood bank collected approximately 2,000 units of blood annually, mainly providing whole blood for surgery and trauma cases. The blood was collected in glass bottles and could only be stored for five days. Today, more than 300 employees staff Hoxworth's nine neighborhood donor centers, and the blood center distributes more than 200,000 blood components annually. Hoxworth serves 28 hospitals in a 17-county region in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, and relies on 350 donors daily to meet the needs of tri-state patients. Blood is now collected in specialized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bags and red blood cells can be stored for up to 42 days. Hoxworth not only supplies red blood cells, but many other blood components, including platelets (5-day storage) and fresh frozen plasma. From a one-room laboratory to a state-of-the-art facility with seven donor centers, Hoxworth continues to strive to provide the safest possible blood supply for the patients in our community. In 1938, the blood bank was a one-room laboratory located in the basement of Cincinnati's General Hospital. A blood transfusion kit a la 1938. According to an archived caption, "The materials have been carefully cleaned (the bottles into which the drawn blood flows are dried in an oven after washing), but the packed kit will be further sterilized by being kept under 15 pounds steam pressure in an autoclave for 15 minutes."

BloodSource

http://www.bloodsource.org

Since 1948, BloodSource has been committed to doing what's right. Operating under our original name, Sacramento Medical Foundation, we grew from a single blood bank beneath a water tower in Sacramento to one of the premier blood centers and blood research organizations in the world. This would not have been possible without the thousands of donors and volunteers who give their time, talent, and life-giving blood. In spring of 2002, we changed our name to better reflect our work and to bring all operations under one name. Our new name, "BloodSource", reflects who we've really been all along: the source of blood and transfusion medicine support to hospitals in the area; the source of advancement in blood services technology; and the source of help where needed beyond our state and national borders. Our growth, and subsequent name change, has been the natural evolution of always doing what's right for the community. In 2002, we set our long-range vision to grow our organization to meet not only the needs of patients within our service area in Northern and Central California, but across the nation. Not only have we been called upon to provide this expanded service, we believe it is the right thing to do.

Foundation for Biomedical Research

http://www.fbresearch.org

Established in 1981, the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) is the nation's oldest and largest organization dedicated to improving human and veterinary health by promoting public understanding and support for humane and responsible animal research. FBR is the leading voice of scientific reason and medical progress in the ongoing, sometimes violent debate that surrounds animal research. FBR's views on the essential need for animal research are outlined in a position paper. FBR's board of governors is chaired by Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, who is internationally recognized for his contributions as a medical inventor, gifted teacher, premier surgeon and scholar, and distinguished medical statesman. Dr. DeBakey is the chancellor emeritus and Olga Keith Wiess Professor of Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, and director of the DeBakey Heart Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Other governors on FBR's board include six Nobel laureates, 13 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 13 fellows of the National Academy of Sciences, a former Surgeon General and a former Cabinet Secretary. Through its innovative educational programs, FBR works to inform the news media, teachers, students and parents, pet owners and other groups about the essential need for lab animals in medical and scientific research and discovery. It serves as an accessible, reliable resource for the news media and works to bring American journalists and scientists together to promote exceptional and ongoing news coverage that contributes to public appreciation and respect for responsible animal research. FBR also monitors and analyzes the activities of animal activists. Its illegal incidents report (Excel spreadsheet) is a record of all known criminal activities committed in the name of "animal rights." As a nonprofit, tax-exempt public foundation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, FBR receives no government funding and relies exclusively on private contributors to underwrite its programs and services.
