FLORENTIA

http://www.florentia.org

FLORENTIA is the ancient name of the city of Florence. It is also the oldest organization offering private walking tours and museum visits in Florence and other destinations in Tuscany. Founders Simone Gaddini and Simone Anichini and a small team of selected docents share a common vision: offering a highly educational experience of the art, history and culture of Florence and Tuscany through private walking tours of the highest quality, while taking care in respecting the dignity of their native city. We believe that the most authentic way to experience and understand the heritage of Florence and Tuscany is in the company of a local scholar, walking through streets which are alive with art and history, immersing in the architecture and learning about the life and customs of Tuscan people past and present. We strive to set ourselves apart from other tour companies in spirit and method. Our itineraries may include world-famous sights and little-known treasures. We cover the architecture, art and history of the place, but do not fail to integrate it with today's most important cultural and social issues. Most importantly, our approach goes well beyond the obvious: we don't need you to know the exact year when a building was built, as much as we care getting you to understand how and why Florence and Tuscany became a center of civilization for several centuries. The most recurring compliment from our clients is that our walking tours are not dry lectures, but engaging conversations. Whether first-time or repeat visitors, independent travelers or families with children, the common element is that our clients share an eagerness to learn about the culture they visit. We are in this business because we love our land and its culture. Our work consists of sharing our passion and knowledge with others. We hope that you will share in our vision and invest in our walking tours. Please explore our website by following the links below.

Museum of Chinese

http://www.moca-nyc.org

The Museum of Chinese in the Americas (MoCA) is the first fulltime, professionally staffed museum dedicated to reclaiming, preserving, and interpreting the history and culture of Chinese and their descendants in the Western Hemisphere. Hailed by the Smithsonian Magazine as "a cultural rescue mission to save a little-known immigrant heritage," MoCA documents an immigrant community that arrived in the Americas with few possessions but very big dreams. After more than 20 years of collecting artifacts, archival and library materials, we are proud to be stewards of one of the most important national archives of materials about Chinese life in America. From rare papers to priceless artifacts, we hold many unusual and unique items indispensable for understanding this contemporary history. The Museum of Chinese in the Americas (MoCA) began as a community-based organization founded in 1980 by Jack Tchen and Charlie Lai and Chinese American artists, historians and students who felt that the memories of first-generation "old-timers" would be lost without oral history, photo documentation, research, and collecting efforts. Now a focal point of the community's cultural life, the Museum has evolved into not only the keeper of the community's documented history, but the community's cultural history as well. MoCA is located downtown in the heart of Manhattan's Chinatown on the second floor of the historic, century-old school building that was once Public School 23. Opened in November 1, 1893, and closing almost exactly 83 years later in October 1976, Public School 23 was built during the great tides of reform activity of the late 19th century, as New York struggled to educate the new waves of immigrants entering the city. Now as Chinatown begins to recover from the events of September 11th, MoCA envisions itself to be the cultural and historical cornerstone, curator, educator, exhibitor and research center of not only Manhattan's Chinatown, but for all Chinese of many nationalities located in the Americas. To make an online donation to support the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, please visit NYCharities.org.

El Museo

http://www.elmuseo.org

In 1977 El Museo was made a member of the Cultural Institutions Group of the City of New York by an act of public policy of the Mayor of New York. This organization encompasses 31 cultural institutions housed in city-owned buildings, from large, world-famous ones like The Metropolitan Museum of Art, to small, community-based ones like El Museo. Through substantial funding, CIG membership acknowledges the importance of the cultural services these institutions render to the population of New York City. El Museo's educational mission continues to drive its collections and programs. At the same time, El Museo has broadened its mission, collections, and programs in response to substantial growth in the Mexican, Central and South American, and Caribbean communities, both in New York and nationally. El Museo's permanent collection remains a treasured resource for developing exhibitions and education programs. In recent years the public programs have been developed to address the educational needs of diverse populations, seniors, adults, adolescents, public school students, and very young visitors. Currently, El Museo has in place an experienced, professional staff, including the first generation of Latinos/as to specialize in the arts and to be trained in curatorial practice. In 1994, El Museo completed an intensive, searching institutional self-study and long range plan. Board, staff, and consultants reviewed and re-affirmed El Museo's mission and program, setting out concrete objectives for institutional and program development through the year 2000. In 1995, El Museo's staff, in concert with a board committee, prepared an overview of capital construction priorities to be addressed over the next 10-15 years. In addition, El Museo has developed its first Long Range Financial and Fundraising Plan. The board and the director have established several task forces, composed of board, staff, and advisors, to focus the museum's efforts and to ensure systematic application of professional standards to each of El Museo's core programs and special initiatives.

Genesee Country Museum

http://www.gcv.org

Genesee Country Village & Museum offers a variety of products related to the museum's 19th-century American life mission. The shop presents books, home decor and the museum souvenirs, but the highlights of the offerings are the products made in the historic village. These include wood-fired redware and stoneware pottery - made on-premises by the museum's master potter - as well as beautiful and utilitarian tinware made by the village's tinsmiths, textiles by the village's weavers, and baskets, ironware, brooms, furniture and handcrafts, all made by the village's historic craft and tradespeople. "We work with our very talented staff to present items that help our guests take a part of the village experience home with them," says Diane Weisbeck, director of museum shops. "It's always nice to be able to help people find a gift that will be beautiful and useful for generations to come."
