Conroe Regional Medical Center

http://www.conroeregional.com

Twenty-five years ago, Conroe Regional Medical Center was known as the "county hospital." Today, having expanded to 360 beds, a staff of 1,200 with over 250 physicians on staff, CRMC is being recognized as a comprehensive regional tertiary referral center. "From newborns who require neonatal intensive care management and monitoring to patients who come to us for off-pump coronary bypass surgery, Conroe Regional Medical Center has come a long way from the title and services of the county hospital," said Jerry Nash, CEO. "We are proud of our associations with hospitals in The Woodlands, Livingston, Huntsville, Cleveland, Tomball, Kingwood, and throughout the region who refer their patients to us when there is a need for a higher level of care." Both the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department are Level III services - providing higher levels of care that are not readily available in many regions between Dallas and Houston. The recently opened and expanded Intensive Care and Cardiac Care Units provide state-of-the-art technology and monitoring for as many as 36 patients at a time. "Having an ICU/CCU of this size happened by design," Nash said. "We planned for the influx of people who are moving to this part of Texas to enjoy the open spaces and lakes in their retirement years. We wanted to provide them with services and quality care when they need it, close to home." The other end of the age spectrum has not been forgotten. Our neonatal unit features intensive care services for high-risk newborns born at CRMC or transported in from anywhere in a 100-mile radius. Neonatologists attend to these babies, as do board certified physicians of many specialties and a certified nursing staff. A transport team, specially trained to prepare, care for and manage these newborns as they are transferred in from other facilities, is on call 24-hours a day. The community will see more evidence of a greater commitment to heart care as facelifts occur throughout the hospital to house additional technology, to provide better accommodations for patients and their families, and to create additional consultation space for our physicians. Development of a comprehensive HeartCare Center will continue to be the focus for CRMC in the years ahead. "We want residents who are experiencing heart problems to have one central location to receive their care. We continue to improve technology and add necessary personnel to insure the best heart care in the region. Heart disease is the nation's number one killer and we want to do all we can to help eradicate it," Nash said. From chest pain to off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, CRMC provides comprehensive cardiovascular services. Patients come for laser heart surgery, open heart surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery and videoscopic vein harvesting, as well as thrombolytic therapy, and peripheral disease services such as balloon angioplasty, stents, rotational atherectomy, and pacemakers. Of course, surgery, outpatient testing, 24/7 emergency care in the CRMC Level III Trauma Center, OB, Women's services, Cancer services, sleep lab, hyperbaric medicine, diabetes management, physical therapy, cardiac rehab and all other services of the hospital will continue to be offered to the region. The objective of Conroe Regional Medical Center remains the same - to serve the people in the community who come to us for their healthcare needs. The focus continues to expand as we offer the entire region a convenient, quality location filled with educated, professional staff who can provide expert care using technologically advanced techniques and equipment right in their own backyard.

Sound Shore Medical Center

http://www.ssmc.org

The SSMC Radiology Department provides a highly sophisticated arsenal of diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic interventions, using advanced techniques in nuclear medicine, diagnostic ultrasound and CT scanning. Radiologists in the Center's Nuclear Medicine Unit use radioactive isotopes to evaluate disorders that can often affect several organs. Spect studies are used to evaluate the condition of the heart, lungs and brain by assessing blood flow, function and ventilation. Bone scans are used to detect bone cancer, infection and unusual fractures. By taking advantage of the most recent advances in diagnostic ultrasound, SSMC radiologists can accurately identfy and detect obstructed bile ducts, liver cysts, tumors, abcesses and a broad range of other abnormalities. Also available in the Imaging Center are CT scanners, which produce cross-sectional images of various organ systems. These images are more detailed and comprehensive than ordinary X-rays and are used to detect inflammatory lesions, abscesses, aneurysms and neoplasms without surgery. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is also available. Located in a private medical facility immediately adjacent to the Medical Center, MRI provides exquisitely detailed pictures of body tissue and internal organs. This state-of-the-art imaging technique is used for the diagnosis of abnormalities of the brain, spine and skeletal system. Stereotactic Breast Biopsy offers women a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure for determining if a suspicious breast mass is benign or malignant. This one hour procedure, performed on an outpatient basis in the Fesjian Ambulatory Surgery Pavilion, is available to women almost immediately after the mass is identified on a mammogram. The patient can usually return home within one hour and resume her normal activities. The referring physician is informed of the results of the needle biopsy within one hour. This advanced diagnostic technique enables women with benign breast masses to avoid surgery and a one to two-day hospital stay. Women whose masses are identified as malignant can begin discussing treatment alternatives with their physicians within 24 hours after the mass was first identified. Radioactive Seed Implant or Brachy Therapy is offered for the treatment of prostate cancer. SSMC Urologists and Radiation Oncologist collaborate in providing this treatment for men with prostate cancer. The physicians use thin needles to implant approximately 70 to 150 radioactive "seeds" into the prostate gland during a two hour procedure performed in the operating room. Patients are anesthesized and usually remain in the hospital overnight. Patients continue to be monitored by their urologist and radiation oncologist. Brachy Therapy is acknowledged as the "treatment of choice" for prostate cancer. SSMC is the only hospital in Westchester County that offers state of the art technology for this procedure. The SSMC Department of Radiology also offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests to determine if a patient is at risk for heart disease. In addition to electrocardiograms and echocardiography, Standard Treadmill Stress Tests and Nuclear Stress Studies help determine the efficiency of the heart muscle and whether there is an adequate supply of blood to the heart both during and after a patient exercises. The SSMC Department of Radiology also offers three Spect gamma cameras that enable physicians to effectively diagnose a variety of heart disorders as well as to evaluate lower back pain and sports injuries. A linear accelerator used to treat cancer is available at the New Rochelle Radiology Asssociates. Using a full range of photon and electron beams, this powerful and advanced technology enhances treatment results and minimizes side effects.
