Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital

http://www.ghmh.org

Gnaden Huetten draws its heritage from the pre-colonial Moravian settlers who in 1746 established a mission, gnadenhuetten, at the mouth of the Mahoning Creek in the vicinity of what today is Lehighton. Following World War II there was a desire by the citizens of Lehighton to establish a memorial in tribute to those Carbon County residents who lost their lives serving their country. On February 12, 1946, the Lehighton residents voted to establish a hospital that would serve as this living memorial. When the articles of incorporation were signed on February 7, 1947 Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital was born. Ground was broken and construction began in June of 1949. Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital was dedicated on March 31, 1951 with the following proclamation: "This shall stand forever as a living memorial to the sacred memory of the men and women of Carbon County who gave their lives so that the world might be one step nearer the peace all men prayerfully hope for." Over many years and many renovations and construction projects, Gnaden Huetten has evolved into an acute care hospital with 111 licensed beds, a 91-bed skilled-nursing facility, and a home health care agency employing approximately 680 people. As a combined organization, Blue Mountain Health System provides a full array of services: from wellness programs, to its two hospitals, to a rehabilitation facility, to long-term care, to home health care, to adult day care and assisted living. It is Carbon County's second largest employer with over 1,000 employees and assets over $80 million. By combining resources, Blue Mountain Health System will be able to fulfill its mission: "to promote, maintain and restore the good health of all the people in the communities we serve through partnerships for excellence in health care service delivery."

Deborah Heart and Lung Center

http://www.deborah.org

Deborah Heart and Lung Center was established in 1922 as a tuberculosis sanitarium and pulmonary center. Legend has it that Deborah's rural Burlington County location was the key to recovery because of its therapeutic Jersey pine barren air. In reality, thousands of TB patients were medically treated and successfully cured by Deborah physicians. With the development of antibiotic medications, which eradicated TB, Deborah began expanding its focus to other chest diseases. In 1958, Dr. Charles Bailey, a pioneer in heart surgery, performed the first open heart surgery at Deborah. The specialty of cardiac diseases was immediately embraced and Deborah evolved into the only cardiac and pulmonary specialty hospital in New Jersey. Today, Deborah offers the latest surgical techniques and non-surgical alternatives for diagnosing and treating all forms of cardiac, vascular and pulmonary diseases in adults, and congenital and acquired heart defects in neonates and children. The Deborah campus consists of Deborah Heart and Lung Center, a 161-bed hospital with a full-service ambulatory care center and Deborah Hospital Foundation, the fundraising arm for the Center with approximately 68,000 volunteers supporting the Deborah mission. In 2001, Deborah was awarded accreditation by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), effective for three years, which is the longest period of accreditation awarded. Since JCAHOs inception, Deborah has always received the maximum time allowed before an institution must be re-accredited.
