Hôpital Charles LeMoyne

http://www.hclm.qc.ca

Since 1992, Hôpital Charles LeMoyne has delivered general, specialized and highly specialized (neuro, thoracic and vascular surgery, kidney dialysis) care and has been affiliated with the Université de Sherbrooke for the following teaching programs: internal medicine, psychiatry, surgery, public health and family medicine. In 1992, it was designated a regional tertiary trauma centre and, the following year, one of the four tertiary trauma centres in Quebec. In 1994, it received additional funds to start acting as a referral centre. In 1992, through its affiliation with the Université de Sherbrooke, Hôpital Charles LeMoyne is to offer postdoctoral programs and help to develop a research centre. In 1994, the hospital inaugurated its tertiary trauma centre, the fourth and last in the network of major trauma centres in Quebec. Hôpital Charles LeMoyne also delivers primary care and its emergency room handles nearly 80,000 visitors each year. It has supported the development of research activities since 1995 and opened a Research Centre. Like other institutions, Hôpital Charles LeMoyne entered the era of ambulatory care and converted two nursing units to meet these new needs. Starting in 1998, the hospital's activities began to expand even more quickly and it was given new mandates by the Montérégie Regional Health and Social Services Board, which recognized its important role, not just in the region but beyond. In the current context of management by results, performance budgeting, and quality and performance optimization, implementing all these changes meant taking the time to plan and integrate them optimally. In 1999, construction started on the rehabilitation facility and, the following year, its clinical activities, traumatology specialization, and research and teaching program began. Hôpital Charles LeMoyne's trauma centre handles all multitrauma victims (200 serious cases, 80 admissions) from the surrounding region, which includes a population of 1.3 million, the main highways between Sorel, Montreal, Valleyfield, Quebec City, Sherbrooke and the U.S., industrial operations (Sorel-South Shore-Valleyfield corridor), farm operations (Richelieu and Yamaska Valleys, "Garden of Quebec") and small towns (Granby-Bromont, Suroît, Sorel). The Montérégie Integrated Cancer Prevention and Treatment Centre opened on January 28, 1999, and a contract was signed affiliating Hôpital Charles LeMoyne with the Université de Sherbrooke, confirming the institution's mission as a teaching hospital. Hôpital Charles LeMoyne is one of top ten short-term care hospitals in Quebec and has the second busiest emergency room in the province. In addition to being the regional hospital for the Montérégie, the institution helps to develop specialized and highly specialized services, is a referring hospital, a community institution and a university-affiliated research and teaching centre. In 2000, a residential mental health rehabilitation facility was opened. In April 2002, the hospital was accredited as a trauma tertiary centre for a five-year period. In September 2002, Fondation Hôpital Charles LeMoyne launched the biggest five-year fundraising campaign in its history with the aim of raising $16 million to help hospital development. In November 2002, the hospital was named by the Montérégie Regional Health and Social Services Board as the designated centre in the greater Longueuil region for sexually abused children up to the age of 13. In November 2002, the hospital inaugurated its MRI Unit. In December 2002, the hospital was certified by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation for a three-year period. In December 2002, the hospital launched its Web site, www.hclm.qc.ca. In March 2003, the hospital opened its Nephrology Outpatient Clinic in St-Lambert. Hôpital Charles LeMoyne is a very important hospital centre. Its current license provides for 531 beds and 40 bassinets. It has been certified by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation since 1997 and is one of the top ten short-term care hospitals in Quebec.

NORDIC TRAUMA FORUM

http://www.nordictrauma.org

The initiative to the Nordic Trauma Forum was taken by a group of participants at the Trauma Care 2002 Congress in Stavanger. A number of medical specialities including surgeons, anaesthesiologists, neurosurgeons and orthopedics were represented; as well as nurses and physicians; hospital and prehospital staff and all the Scandinavian countries. We found it important to continue cooperation in the team approach to the trauma patient in a Nordic model: the Nordic Trauma Forum (NTF). The purpose of the NTF is to improve the trauma care including all aspects from prevention, the prehospital phase, the patient arriving at the emergency room, through diagnostics, surgical and intensive care treatment until the phase of rehabilitation. NTF is an open to everyone with interest in and willingness to work with improvement of trauma care. We find it valuable to establish a Nordic forum to exchange ideas and to cooperate in all aspects of trauma. Topics discussed for NTF was a nordic trauma database and guidelines for managements of the trauma patient applicable in the nordic healthcare system. Furthermore trauma care does not only concern injured patient but also family and relatives. Is important to keep focus on trauma as severe injury still is the number one cause of death among children and younger adults and a major cause of disability. We plan to meet in the spring 2003. It is open to all interested. Announcement will be given in Akuttjournalen. At this meeting we intend to form working groups considering those topics that the participants find most interesting and important. Further more we plan to join and to have a session at the British Traumas Society meeting in October 2003. For those interested in Nordic Trauma Forum, please, contact us. We welcome suggestions for topics to our meeting spring 2003.
