Smith Genetics

http://www.smithgenetics.com

Smith Genetics focuses tremendous amounts of energy on breeding good cattle, but just as importantly they focus on kids. Their interest in juniors and the incentives they provide their junior customers are recognized across breeds. Smith was executive secretary of the Kentucky Simmental Association and some of his juniors there included Chan and Keith Phillips, successful Simmental breeders themselves, Terry Burks, a well known judge of several species; Keith and Chi Swain, whose family operates Swain Cattle Co. and Donnie Robertson, with Express Ranches, Yukon, Oklahoma. "I take a lot of pride in having the privilege of being associated with these guys, when they were just in high school. They were awesome and very competitive on the national level, " says Smith. The Smith junior program, includes participating in the Simbrah Sensation, the Simmental/Simbrah Superbowl, of which Smith was largely responsible for for creating and 15 years later still spearheads annually during the San Antonio Livestock Show. In addition, junior customers can use semen from Smith's herd bull battery, bring the heifers back to be bred, as well as call for advice anytime. Plus he holds a camp in May to help his junior customers and others prepare for the state junior futurity, Simbrah Roundup, AJSA Regionals and the AJSA National Classic. "I've always enjoyed working with youth and I feel the junior program in these two breeds is by far the best and provides a true educational experience beyond just showing. I want to help kids and through our camp we can encourage them as well as prepare them to be involved on a state and national level," he says. Smith has bred many champions over the past 20 years, including Kara Finch's heifer that was the champion Simbrah at San Antonio in 2003, which netted her the $6,000 scholarship. At the 2005 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo open show, Smith bred individuals were named Champion Simmental Female and Champion Simbrah bull--two breeds, two grand champions, all from one calf crop and is one of Smith's proudest accomplishments. Smith Genetics relies on private treaty sales. In addition to their strong base of junior clientele, Smith's genetics have been purchased by breeders in Brazil, South Africa, Botswana and Mexico. Smith Genetics was headquartered in Kyle, Texas for a number of years, but in 2004 relocated to Giddings Texas. They are just 2 miles south of Giddings just off of Hwy 77. "We are building a new sale facility and plan to bring back our production sale in the near future. We have always and are still doing commercial embryo transfer and artificial insemination work and would be happy to discuss the services and options we can offer purebred breeders," says Smith. He consults with Reavis Farms, Mission, Texas and McCrary's Family Farm, DeKalb, Texas. Recently Smith's brothers and sisters, who reside in Kentucky decided to enter in the Simmental cattle business as a family venture and Tim is involved in this operation also. Haley is currently maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Austin College as a sophomore and is considering a career in law and archeology. She is still very active in the cattle program and was a successful TJSSA and AJSA member, competing at all levels. Smith is an avid promoter and can be found ringside at most junior shows throughout the state as well as Simgenetic and industry events. "We feel Simgenetics have many valuable assets for the industry and we would love to have you visit and learn more about our program, our philosophy and our cattle," encourages Smith.

Magnum Swine Genetics Inc.

http://www.magnumswine.com

Magnum Swine Genetics Inc. is a company which started in December of 1996. We started off with our own pooled Yorkshire and Landrace which where selected for maternal traits, a couple of Duroc boars and a select number of Landrace and Yorkshire boars from other breeding companies; totaling to 15 boars. Lab results, customer information and orders where all manually written out by hand. Collection for customer orders and customer relation was handled by one full-time position, the owner Andrew Beusekom, while lab preperation, semen quality control and packaging was handled by Jannette Beusekom. Today Magnum Swine Genetics Inc. is still growing, currently housing 120 boars with a future of doubling this operation to a 240 boar stud. We still carry our own Yorkshire and Landrace pooled lines which are still selected for their maternal traits. A wide variety of animals are housed to provide customers with a large range of genetics; from animals selected out of England and Ireland for new bloodlines to boars from major breeding companies in North America including Designed Genetics Inc, Dalland, Genetiporc and Peak Swine Genetics. We can no longer keep up to customer demand manually, so we've upgraded to using computers for lab results, customer information, invoicing and customer orders. Throughout the week, business is taken care of by two full-time positions, and during collection hours an additional 11 part-time positions, consisting of 6 barn technicians and 5 lab technicians, are filled, working hard to get customer orders processed and shipped. From the very beginning, Magnum Swine Genetics Inc. had a commitment to customer satisfaction, a high standard of quality and a stringent health protocol. We still have that commitment today. With technology we can provide a fast, efficient service to pork producers while still maintaining our high standard of quality. With the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, along with our own health protocol, we have maintained a clean health status, assuring the quality of the product produced. With a high standard of quality and a strong health protocol we are sticking to our commitment ... customer satisfaction.

Grund Beef Genetics

http://www.grundbeefgenetics.com

Grund Beef Genetics produces moderate framed, thick, high volume cattle with calving ease along with above average growth traits. You'll find 5 to 6 frame cattle that are soggy, deep sided, while sporting 70-80# birth weights while ranking in the top 30-40% of the breed for performance traits. Grund Beef Genetics are predictable because we've mated highly proven genetics over the last 10 years. The highly proven genetics are backed with proven EPD's derived from thousands of Angus, Red Angus, and Gelbvieh cattle. Our cowherd is mated to proven, profitable, sires that add value to every generation of calves. Grund Beef Genetics was one of the first Gelbvieh operations to use ultrasound in determining carcass values in Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Grund Beef Genetics will have over 10 years of ultrasound information in 2006. We are located in feedlot country and know that good carcass cattle can add over $50/hd value to each calf! Our cattle are stacked with high value data! Grund Beef Genetics continue to supply the right genetics for profitable cattlemen. Grund Beef Genetics has over 200 hd of commercial Balancer (Gelbvieh/Angus) cattle that have been fed over the last 5 years. Our commercial cattle continue to collect $20 to $30 a head premium over the fat market due to the value of carcass traits. Grund Beef Genetics also is proud of the value our bulls add to the commercial cowman. In 2004-2005 feeder cattle sired by Grund Beef Genetic bulls topped the sales at Oakley Livestock and Syracuse Commission Company. If you would like an extra $5 to $10/cwt on your feeder calves than come to Grund Beef Genetics.

Caprine Genetics

http://www.caprinegenetics.com

At Caprine Genetics, our primary goal is to develop performance based genetics for the commercial producer. While Kikos are dominant in our main herd, we also maintain a small full blood herd of Savannas and Arapawas. Each breed brings slightly different attributes to the program, yet each has to meet the same criteria for production. Our focus is to produce animals that will maintain growth rates and high cut out carcasses with minimal inputs. To accomplish this, our goats must have good parasite resistance, good maternal traits and lack foot problems. We run our goats on combined pastures and cutover timber land which requires them to be good foragers as well as being able to cover the range areas to locate food and water. We are developing an on-farm buck performance testing area that is mostly cutover timberland and the bucklings must be able to enter this area at weaning and thrive under normal SE Va. conditions with minimal producer intervention. We require our does to: 1. Kid at 12 - 15 months of age. 2. Produce 3 sets of kids in two years.

Thoroughbred Genetics Ltd

http://www.thoroughbredgenetics.com

At Thoroughbred Genetics, we develop and carry out genetic tests for the racing industry. We empower our clients with genetic tools to help them identify, breed and race thoroughbreds to gain a leading edge. Thoroughbred Genetics was created in 2000 by Dr. Steve Harrison. Our vision was to utilise the power of state-of-the-art genetic technology in conjunction with an in-depth knowledge of genetics and racing to improve the effectiveness of thoroughbred breeding and performance. Our most recent, patented and scientifically-published genetic research has enabled us to take our expertise beyond the realms of breeding into the spheres of training and racehorse performance prediction. By harnessing the very latest genetic technology with our in-depth knowledge of breeding and racing, we are effectively fast-forwarding the traditional thoroughbred industry over 200 years into the 21st century. Virtually no sport is untouched by advances in science to increase performance. Racquets, bats and clubs hit harder, shoes help athletes to run faster. Products are stronger, smoother, lighter, and more aerodynamic. In sport, technology is added to enhance performance. In racing, the scientific information is already there in the form of DNA - we are already using it for competitive advantage. Thoroughbred Genetics has unlocked genetic performance and prepotency secrets of the thoroughbred racehorse and brought to the market a range of tests, each one invaluable to owners, breeder or trainers. From a single blood sample and our extensive database, we can provide mating recommendations for mares and stallions. We can score the prepotency of potential sires and dams. And, we can assess the inheritance of specific DNA components, which have a direct role on performance. Thoroughbred Genetics is the first commercial organisation in the field of equine performance genetics in the world. We are privileged to be working with some of the best international breeders and horses and we are achieving new milestones consistently. With the possible exception of computer science, the pace of discovery and development within the genetics arena is unparalleled. Genetic science is widespread in the identification and treatment of diseases. In forensics, DNA fingerprinting has an unequivocal accuracy. For well over a decade, routine genetic analysis has been commonly applied to agricultural animals such as sheep and cattle to enhance their genetic management and yields. Yet advances in genetics and DNA technology have largely neglected thoroughbred breeding, which is itself a genetics business. That is, until now ... Please contact us for further details. Not least, to help their breeding management, we have provided genetics information on the genetic status of winners of GR 1 races, including the Derby, Oaks, Japan Cup, Eclipse Stakes, Arc de Triomphe, International Stakes, Moyglare Stakes, Test Stakes, Ribblesdale Stakes, Beverly Hills Handicap, Matriarch Stakes, Yellow Ribbon Stakes, American Oaks, Beverly D Stakes, Breeders Cup Turf, Fillies Mile Stakes and Melbourne Cup. Thoroughbred Genetics is revolutionising traditional aspects of the thoroughbred industry. We are using valuable genetic information, that has never before been available, to enhance productivity and success in the breeding barns, at the sales and on the track. Let Thoroughbred Genetics help you in your quest to win.

Flying H Genetics

http://www.flyinghgenetics.com

Flying H Genetics is a family-owned and managed ranch and farm operation in southwest Nebraska, near the town of Arapahoe. The operation began in 1976 after we (Dick Helms and wife Bonnie) moved back following college. We went into debt purchasing the place we call home from an uncle on contract. We found operating money at the same bank we use today. Starting with such a high debt load meant we had to spend and invest wisely. Slowly expanding our farming and cattle operation, we added Gelbvieh cattle to the operation in 1982 as a way to generate more income from the same acres. Seedstock production is a form of intensive agriculture since we are adding value to the cattle we sell. The operation continued to grow, not driven by the desire to be bigger, but by the need to be more efficient to justify an annual sale. In 1992, after two years of study and research, the Flying H changed it's name from Flying H Gelbvieh to Flying H Genetics, and added the GelPLUSTM division to its seedstock offerings. GelPLUSTM is a trademarked composite breeding seedstock production system that uses A. I. and cooperator herds to build hybrid bulls to be used in composite crossbreeding systems. As we gained experience, we wanted to assure our customers of the quality of their genetics, so we developed what is referred to as our 16 Quality Standards. These minimum standards for sixteen different traits are the basis for our selection and culling programs. This disciplined approach has greatly improved the consistency and predictability of our bulls. We strongly feel that any bull you buy should be an industry improver, not just a cow settler. Although the challenge of seedstock production is our first love, the other main enterprise in our operation is crops. Raising corn, soybeans, oats, milo and hard red winter wheat on both irrigated and dryland acres complement the cattle quite well. The crops add diversification, cash income, feed for the cows, crop residue for winter feed and year round labor needs for the three full-time employees now helping Flying H Genetics. Dick, Bonnie, Bryan and Kyle Helms produce genetics that will benefit the beef industry for years to come. As is true with all family stories, it couldn't have happened without the support of family and friends, neighbors and employees. We acknowledge this support and say thank you to all who've helped us build a life in Nebraska agriculture.
