Vortec Corporation

http://www.vortec-cms.com

Vortec is building a 36 ton/day radioactive waste vitrification plant for the United States Department of Energy (DOE). DOE and Vortec Corporation of Collegeville, Pennsylvania hosted a site dedication ceremony for the Vitrification Demonstration Plant being constructed at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) located in Paducah, Kentucky. The ceremony was held on Wednesday, 16 October 1996 at the construction site. Mr. Jimmie C. Hodges, Paducah Site Office Manager for the U.S. DOE, opened the event by summarizing the waste processing needs at Paducah. Currently stored on site are 50,000 drums of radioactive and hazardous waste generated by a process that enriches uranium for nuclear fuel. According to Hodges, the "waste is basically characterized as either low level or low-level mixed waste in that it has, both, low levels of radioactivity and low levels of toxic materials which would be classified as hazardous waste." Environmental regulations prevent such wastes from going into a burial facility without treatment. A time table for disposal is also mandated. Under DOE sponsorship, the Vortec vitrification/glass-making technology is being constructed at PGDP to meet this challenge. The Vortec process is designed to treat a variety of waste streams, including: soil, rock, sand, and concrete wastes that contain Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and other organic compounds found at PGDP. The end product is an inert glass frit that passes leachate and toxicity tests, resulting in less costly and more efficient storage options. Until now, there has been no economically acceptable disposal method for these waste materials. Previous methods for the disposal of nuclear contaminated wastes were too costly, time consuming and difficult to implement. Vortec President, Dr. James Hnat, stated that, "Our vitrification process will make glass from these waste materials without adverse effects to the surrounding environment. It will be a glass that is chemically stable, thereby enabling the wastes to be safely stored for tens of thousands of years." Not only is the Vortec vitrification facility environmentally conscious, but U.S. taxpayers are expected to save $40 million with the process. Dr. Clyde Frank, DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary for Science and Technology, touted the cost savings of the process and noted, "The Vortec process is a big win for the tax payers, our customer." The glass frit produced will meet the criteria for storage in low-level disposal facilities used by DOE, with the potential for on-site disposal at Paducah. This contributes to the cost savings by eliminating the need to construct additional waste storage facilities, reducing the total volume of solid waste material needing storage, and reducing the costs associated with monitoring, maintenance, and final disposal of the waste. To acquire funding support, Vortec had to convince DOE that this innovative technology offers an effective and economical solution for the disposal of low level radioactive contaminated wastes. In addition, the robustness of the system's ability to effectively process the variety of waste forms existing at Paducah had to be proven. Vortec also had to show it has the necessary technical and support talent to design, construct, and operate a state of the art waste vitrification system that will satisfy DOE, state regulatory, and community concerns regarding the processing of low-level radioactive and hazardous waste materials. The radioactive wastes will be processed only after non-radioactive surrogates are successfully processed. During the non-radioactive waste testing at Paducah, the facility will vitrify soils or other materials that are chemically similar, or equivalent, to the ultimate waste forms to be treated. The plant will process the targeted mixed wastes at a rate of 160 drums per day. Vortec's president expressed confidence in the success of the project due to the extensive testing already performed at the company's pilot plant facilities in Pennsylvania (at about half the size of the demonstration plant to be constructed at Paducah), as well as their operational experiences from processing hazardous industrial wastes at a commercial facility (with approximately twice the processing capacity of the Paducah demonstration plant). Upon completion of waste processing at Paducah, the transportable unit can be dismantled and moved to clean-up some of the nation's other waste sites within DOE and for other businesses across the country. Hnat added, "The vitrification demonstration project at Paducah is a very important program for the site as well as the nation. This is going to be an excellent opportunity for DOE, the community, and the state of Kentucky to demonstrate that environmental responsibility can co-exist with our modern technical society."

Bedminster Bioconversion Corporation

http://www.bedminster.com

Bedminster Bio-Conversion (1970 to 1999) and Bedminster AB (1999 to 2003) promoted Bedminster as a composting technology service and a cost to municipalities. Substantial R&D and Marketing overheads, together with long sales cycles, resulted in high upfront licence fees and royalties being required to sustain the business. This in turn thwarted market development, which resulted in just twelve Bedminster facilities in operation. Since acquiring the global rights to the Bedminster technology in June 2003, we have targeted the waste companies as well as the municipalities. We have modified the technology to expand the product outlet market and open up the renewable energy opportunity. Improved economic conditions and increasing environmental regulations also make it a more favourable marketplace for the Bedminster technology.

Casie Protank Inc

http://www.casieprotank.com

Casie Protank was established in January 1979 as an oil reclamation and tank management business. The company grew and was divided into two companies in June 1982; Rezultz Inc., became the leasing and management company, and Casie Ecology Oil Salvage Inc. (t/a Casie Protank) was incorporated as the environmental business. Casie continued to handle tank management, including cleaning, decontamination, removal, installation, testing and repair of above and underground tanks. The company's tank-cleaning capabilities range from simple decontamination of 55-gallon drums to cleaning 22 million gallon #6 oil storage tanks. In addition to cleaning tanks that contained flammable or combustible petroleum products, Casie also cleans tanks that have held both caustic and acidic chemical compounds such as styrene, methyl ethyl ketone, and butyl acrylate. Casie Protank's tank installation experience ranges from 275-gallon homeowner oil tanks to 30,000-gallon above and underground tanks. Tank removals consist of tanks as small as a 275-gallon steel tank to as large as a 100,000-gallon concrete tank. Casie has been an EPA/NJDEP-approved Part B facility since 1983 for the disposal, handling, processing and treatment of tank bottom materials resulting from the removal of underground and aboveground storage tanks. As a licensed hazardous waste facility in the State of New Jersey, Casie Protank complies with the most stringent rules and regulations and requires that all employees dealing with hazardous wastes complete OSHA 40-hour training (see listing of personnel experience and training). Casie is also a licensed hazardous and solid waste transporter in 17 states and Canada, and must comply with DOT regulations and environmental regulations for each. As Casie continued to grow, so did its needs. With the addition of an in-house NJDEP-certified laboratory designed as a quality-control mechanism for the facility and field services personnel, and the expansion of the geology department, Casie could not only perform tank services, but also environmental consulting, such as soil and groundwater investigation studies. Such growth has turned Casie into a full-service environmental company. The company's privately owned and maintained fleet of tankers, excavators, backhoes, vacuum trucks, roll-off boxes, testing vans, and emergency response service vehicles and equipment enable Casie to handle projects in a timely and efficient manner. Casie Protank has the resources to handle anything from a simple homeowner tank removal to large soil and groundwater remediation projects. Let our experience work for you.

Sterecycle

http://www.sterecycle.com

Sterecycle is a waste management company specialising in advanced systems for the treatment and recycling of municipal wastes. We finance, build, own and operate plants to provide recycling services to local authorities using our patented advanced steam autoclave system. 18 million tonnes of municipal waste are landfilled every year in the UK. The EU Landfill Directive requires member states to dramatically reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled or face heavy fines. The UK government is committed to reducing landfill and increasing recycling, evidenced by the continuing increases in Landfill Tax. Landfill Tax has increased from £12 per tonne in 2003 to £24 per tonne in 2007 and will reach £48 per tonne by 2010. However, the UK government's introduction of the Landfill Allowance Scheme on 1st April 2005 has placed even greater financial pressure on councils to secure waste treatment technology services. For every tonne of organic waste (around 60% of the waste stream) that a council sends to landfill over its annual landfill allowance, it must pay an additional penalty of £150 per tonne (£200 per tonne in Wales), in addition to the cost of landfill and the Landfill Tax. The sterecycle® system is capable of recycling and recovering up to 80% of domestic waste with a sterile and environmentally-friendly process. The system is cleaner, safer, more cost effective and more efficient than technologies such as standard mechanical sorting "Material Recycling Facilities", in-vessel composting, Mechanical-Bio-Treatment, advanced thermal treatment and incineration. Indeed, sterecycle® can be integrated with existing systems to pre-recover recyclables and dramatically improve system performance.
