SPSA

The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) operates a state-of-the-art solid waste management system in South Hampton Roads, Virginia. SPSA manages approximately one million tons of solid waste annually. Since 1973, SPSA has been chartered to manage a regional system and is the winner of numerous environmental and operational awards. SPSA operates more than 14 facilities and has over 500 employees. Its service area is 2,000 square miles in size. SPSA's Waste-to-Energy system converts South Hampton Roads' municipal solid waste into commercial steam. In the last fiscal year, over 600,000 tons of waste were converted into fuel at SPSA's waste processing plant. The plant is adjacent to the southern branch of the Elizabeth River at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth.

Through its subsidiaries the Company provides collection, transfer, recycling, disposal and waste-to-energy services. WMI’s customers include commercial, industrial, municipal and residential customers, other waste management companies, electric utilities and governmental entities. The Company operates in six operating groups, of which four are organized by geographic area and two are organized by function. The geographic groups include WMI’s Eastern, Midwest, Southern and Western Groups, and the two functional groups are its Wheelabrator Group and WM Recycle America (WMRA) Group.
