Indiana University Press was founded in 1950 and is the largest publisher among Big Ten presses and the tenth largest university press in the country. Its mission is to inform and inspire scholars, students, and other thoughtful readers by disseminating ideas and knowledge of global significance, regional importance, and lasting value. The Press's current annual output includes 15 journals and 160 book titles, of which, in a typical year, 115 are original editions, 20 are paperback reprints, 15 are co-publications, and 10 are titles distributed for other presses. They maintain approximately 2,000 books in print, which, together with out-of-print titles, brings their total output to more than 5,000 volumes in fve decades. IU Press has published such world-class scholars and writers as Umberto Eco, Henry Glassie, Melville Herskovits, Russell Hoban, Langston Hughes, Rolfe Humphries, Alfred Kinsey, Henry Mitchell, H.J. Muller, Mark Musa, Robert O'Neil, Scott Sanders, Thomas Sebeok, Russell Weigley, and Eugene Wigner; translations of the works of Beckett, Brecht, Heidegger, Husserl, Kant, Kierkegaard, Octavio Paz, Pushkin, and Voltaire; reprints of Conrad Aiken, John Dewey, Henry James, D.H. Lawrence, Jawaharlal Nehru, Theodore Roethke, Albert Schweitzer, Gene Stratton-Porter, and Booth Tarkington; and published editions of W.D. Howells and C.S. Pierce. These publications and others like them have proved of enduring value and secured Indiana University Press's reputation as a first-class publisher.
