Thistle Hill Publications was founded in the year 2000 by Jack Crowl, a retired journalist who has lived in Vermont for the past 15 years. In his previous life, Crowl was publisher of The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, both based in Washington DC. He now lives halfway up Thistle Hill in North Pomfret with his spouse, the artist Gaal Shepherd and their Golden Retriever, Harpo (who can, like his namesake, communicate well without speaking). To date, all of Thistle Hill's productions have been art and/or photography books. But as a one-plus-a-fraction-man operation run by a part-time retiree, output has been modest. The "fractional" staffer is Ron Rhodes, also a refugee from the flatland (Ohio and DC) whose main occupation is as a fly-fishing guide. Four books are now on the market and available for sale on line or in bookstores: Tranquil Vermont: the Pastels of Gaal Shepherd
