North American Bear Company

http://www.nabear.com

NABCO is a wholesale manufacturer. We do not sell products directly to consumers, but our toys are sold in many specialty independent childrens, toy and gift stores, national catalogues and better department stores. Our website www.nabear.com can help you locate stores within a specific area code or zip code. If a store does not have the item you want in stock, feel free to request a special order or try other locations for mail orders. NABCO can also help you find a store if you cannot locate a product shown on our website. Can I get a catalogue? Since NABCO is wholesale manufacturer, we do not print consumer catalogues. If you would like our Muffy consumer catalogue, click here. I lost/broke a part of my NABCO mobile. Can I purchase another plastic mobile arm or music box without buying another complete mobile set? Yes. As a special courtesy service, you can obtain replacement mobile arms and/or current music boxes from NABCO. NABCO can supply you with another mobile arm or specific mobile music box as long as the part is available in our inventory. Please send a check or money order payable to North American Bear Co. for $9 and indicate if you need a mobile arm (part #K1483A) OR music box (indicate which mobile you have as each one plays a different tune). Send your request and payment along with your name and mailing address to: North American Bear Co. Attn: Mobile Parts 1200 West 35th St Chicago, IL 60609 Allow 1-2 weeks for delivery once we receive your order. Your payment includes the replacement part(s) and shipping charges. Does NABCO make charitable contributions to non-profit organizations? North American Bear Company tries to support the fundraising work of charities whenever possible through the donation of merchandise. Over the last few years, it has become impossible to fulfill the ever-increasing number of requests we receive. At this point in time, we will only be donating to large, national organizations for fundraising auctions and raffle prizes. (Sorry, gift bags, table centerpiece decorations, door prizes and other "give-away" treats do not qualify.) In the case where national organizations have chapters in several cities, we will donate to the Chicago chapters. Our primary goal will be to donate to charitable organizations focusing on the needs of domestic children. Alas, we are not able to assist every school, church, PTA group, kids' club, community organization, scout troop, hospital, collectors club, etc. that asks for our assistance.

SoftBelly's Inc

http://www.screeniebeanies.org

SoftBelly's®, Inc. designs, contracts the manufacture and then distributes a proprietary line of computer monitor, and DVD and CD cleaners for use by the customer in wiping the dust that accumulates regularly on the sensitive surface of the monitor screens. The entire product line is marketed through office products channels, gift & stationery store groups and booksellers. The SoftBelly's® product is also marketed to the advertising specialty & Executive gift marketplace through firmly established dealer and distribution channels. SoftBelly's®, Inc. through its principals, has been issued a US Patent on its full product line and has applications for the issuance of the same patent in several foreign countries, that are currently in the process of prosecution. SoftBelly's® product line was developed to provide customers with a fun and functional tool to address the mundane task of electronic equipment cleaning. The companies objectives were to fulfill a void that existed in several different commercial channels including the office products wholesale and retail community, the bookselling wholesale and retail community, the school supply industry, and the advertising specialty and corporate customers that could join in the fun in using SoftBelly's® to represent their company. At the earliest stage of development of SoftBelly's® the two principals had a number of discussions, about refashioning a rather vapid product that had been sold to a major distributor in the office products and computer accessory business. The distributor had ordered 50,000 units of the " computer cleaner" - and when they received the order were satisfied there was a need - but - it wasn't selling as quickly as they thought. It seemed that the consumer didn't need just another cleaning rag even though our earliest model - was actually fashioned out of genuine leather "chamois". There were a few small orders from computer manufacturers and monitor manufacturers who felt it was a good product and maybe they could include it in their service catalogue or maybe package it with hardware. It sounded intriguing -- we felt there was a need for a monitor cleaner like ours that requires no sprays or liquids, is non-abrasive to the sensitive screens, and was well packaged. But in the words of Gertrude Stein " there was no there, there!" We had a good "steak" - but there was no "sizzle". In 1998, it was decided that if a business was going to be built - we should look to the needs of the "consumer" or "end user". So rather than write our plans on the back of a napkin ... enemies and anyone who would listen and discuss what they used to clean their monitor screens with the few who found the question impertinent still answered with some good points. Then we asked the more important probing questions - what would you like of your Computer Cleaning Cloth? We also extended our questioning to include other computer accessories and desk accessories that the customer liked to have around. From this myriad of questions, and following a number of "What if we did this meetings?" it was decided that a better mousetrap was only the basest of ingredients. To build a business particularly a concept business - we needed to take a number of necessary steps before we introduced our product in its "market ready" final form. In mid 1998, as the ideas and problem resolutions were being heartily discussed it was agreed that to go forward in developing this company. We should take all necessary steps to secure intellectual property rights to our product line, including applying for a utility patent on the idea and the "display cleaning tools" we would develop. We also applied for trademarks and later copyrights. The design components and characters were planned; SoftBelly's® would need a family to create a line of products. Manufacturing sources were researched and prototypes were developed. Identifying tags were developed, each character would take on a name (copyrighted), each would have a birth date, and there would be a fun personal poem. There would be no identity crisis for any of the SoftBelly's®. Who would we sell this grandiose idea to - if we ever decided to start the business? Marketing plans and competitive analyses began to be developed. We had to depend wholly on the "trade skills" of the founders there wasn't the luxury of a market research budget. No time for focus groups. The decisions were made to "test the waters" of a couple of industries. Simply put run it up the "flagpole" and see if it flies. Will it play in Peoria? It was time to visit the marketplace - see what opportunity may lie in the hearts of dealers, and distributors. What existed in the form of competition? Who else would be competing for the "attention" that we so richly deserved. What we found after abbreviated research and a number of browse sessions through several retail and wholesale stores and catalogues was that opportunity for our product plans was wide open. There was an all-important "niche" available and with the use of imaginative packaging, a straightforward sales approach, and a well orchestrated marketing plan this "niche" could be built to create a nice business. Then came time for the "reality check" - this would be a start up. We had already begun our applications on the intellectual property, we had received 15 prototypes from our initial manufacturer (2 of each), we had proposed a name for our product line, we had developed character names and poems and birthdates, we even discussed a retail price range for the product - but nothing was in "semi finished" form. A number of meetings had been scheduled with representative organizations. A rep was selected, who was going to be showing his products at a trade show and offered to put a sample out on the table and do a little trolling. The company was only able to send one set of prototypes, of only the initial twelve designs with no packaging nor display offering provided - and the rep was not equipped to write an order because the purchase order system wasn't in place. Had Lady Luck been on our side of the table, this scant showing might give us an indication of the interest level for our to be announced new product release - only 3 or 4 dealers viewed the product. Within weeks after the show we got our first order, which was ten times the size we had anticipated. There was a problem we had no product, no company and no packaging finalized. Orders were placed with the manufacturer, trademarked tags were completed and approved, and a call was made to the customer to see that they would accept delayed delivery. The customer said of course and placed four additional orders for the same delivery dates and what started out as an anticipated order $144 quickly became $8,000, more importantly we answered another question. "Would it play in Peoria?" The initial order came from a town one-fifth the size of Peoria, Illinois - Grand Island, Nebraska. In between this activity - we took an existing corporation owned by one of the principals and changed the name to reflect the name of our "new" product. That was in January 1999 we couldn't ship our earliest orders until late March and inquiries were flowing in. Along with the formation of the company, we realized that it would have to be "Operation Bootstrap" long hours, no pay and the most important ingredient for the successful survival of this fledgling company was the ability to internally fulfill and ship our orders satisfactorily to our customers. We could ill afford to outsource any services. Packaging and display materials that were so essential to our willing buyers in the channels of trade - needed to be produced as inexpensively as possible and most importantly controlled within the company. That same plan, including all of the ordering, responding to all customers needs is still being carefully handled within the company - and the few dedicated people that continue to make this company run are only compensated based on performance. 4 years later, the company has grown to a total of 25 designs and a variety of display solutions for different applications. Retailers with limited shelf space can utilize our "Lazy Susan" Spinner Rack. It needs less than 3 ft2 of floor space and will hold 144 pieces. Two sizes of willow baskets will hold either 25 or 50 units and include a full color display to promote the product. In addition, the cuddly SoftBelly's® are available on a backer card or in a "clam shell" display box for retailers with "pegged wall displays" or for "clip-strip" applications. Softbelly's are distributed exclusively by Great Western Business Service. For information on how to become an Authorized SoftBelly's® Dealer, or to find out where to buy our products, send email to info@softbellysonline.com.
