Advanced Orthotic Designs(AOD) is a Canadian company that specializes in the design, fabrication and fitting of complex orthopedic devices for persons with physical disabilities. AOD was established in the spring of 1997. The proprieters are both Certified Orthotists and have a combined professional experience of over 40 years in the field of Orthotics. AOD operates three divisions: Mobility Devices and Walkers Pediatric & Adult Orthotic Devices Research and Development The Mobility Division now carries a variety of mobility devices which includes the Standing Dani ® which is a mobile stander, the Meywalk® walker and the SMART Walker Ô Orthosis. AOD is the most experienced facility in North America with gait training orthoses and currently offers an educational course on these devices. We were originally involved in a research study on the Mark I - Hart Mobility Orthosis from 1994 to 1996. We also have experience with the Mark II which was introduced to Canada in 1996. While a few children were tried in the Mark II, we were not impressed with this design and had safety concerns. However in 1997 a group of volunteers affiliated with the Windsor Rotary Club manufactured 150 walkers similar in design to the Mark I version and we were able to give many children the opportunity to walk. Subsequent to the Hart Mobility Orthosis we have developed a new and better device that provides a means of upright mobility for children with cerebral palsy or similar medical conditions that otherwise would not be able to walk. It is called the SMART Walker Ô . While there are other devices available with various claims, the SMART Walker Ô is a subsequent improvement over other devices and is the culmination of related research, years of clinical experience and consumer feedback from caregivers, children, orthotists and therapists. This is not the effort of only one person but a design that puts many ideas and suggestions into practice. A child's suitability for any of our mobility devices is determined on our Mobility Clinic. We also have several affiliated clinics which provide the SMART Walker Ô services and the Piedro footwear. The Orthotic Devices Division focuses on custom orthoses such as AFOs and KAFOs, sports injury devices ranging from custom knee braces to custom foot orthoses, ankle supports and related soft garments. The Research and Development Division is focused on improving mobility devices to enhance a child's ability to learn to walk so as to maximize their individual potential enhancing their overall quality of life.
