  • Colorado Valley Transit was founded in 1986 in Colorado County; later the same year service was expanded to Austin and Waller counties; and in 1989 service was expanded into Wharton County. The Texas State Legislature authorized the creation of the transit as a district August 31, 1995. The Transit is a non-profit public transportation system governed by local board members of the communities. The Transit is a non-profit agency 501 C (3), under the exempt status of the Internal Revenue Code. CVTD receives federal subsidy for transportation through the Federal Transportation Administration and state funds from Texas Transportation Commission, which is administered by a contract with the Texas Department of Transportation. These funds reimburse CVTD for a portion of trip expenses, and the remaining cost made up by county and city contributions, fares, donations, contracts, i.e. Houston Galveston Area Council for senior citizen transportation in Austin & Waller County, United Way for Waller County, local stakeholders, and grants from other agencies or businesses.
