  • Merseyrail operates a Penalty Fare scheme across the whole network in line with other train operators in the UK. All of our stations now have facilities to enable you to buy your ticket before you board the train, you cannot buy a ticket on board. Under the Penalty Fares scheme passengers must purchase a ticket for their entire journey before boarding a train. Any passenger who is found travelling without a valid ticket for their entire journey is liable to be issued with a Penalty Fare of at least £20 by our Ticket Inspectors plus the fare to the passengers' destination station if continuing their journey. The money collected from the Penalty fare scheme will be reinvested into further security measures on Merseyrail, such as increased use of security guards across the network and additional CCTV cameras. Bart Schmeink, Managing Director of Merseyrail, said: "Penalty Fares have helped to reduce anti-social behaviour and have improved personal security for our passengers. I want passengers who travel on our trains to pay for their journeys; the vast majority of our passengers are honest and they should not be subsidising the dishonest ones."
