The primary product under development is a modified starch/cellulose based drug delivery system for topical ocular drugs that is safe and has gelling properties similar to gellan gum, but also has the ability to only gel in situ (when applied to the eye). These polymers will be suitable for use as excipients in ophthalmic formulations to increase ocular bioavailability. The main features and benefits of this product are increased bioavailability, ease of use by patients, and reduced dose frequency. The product will allow for pharmaceutical companies to re-formulate their current products and apply for extended patent protection. This is a substantial cost reduction from discovering and developing a new pharmaceutical agent. These materials represent the first of a number of medical and drug delivery products that are to be characterized (discovered) and developed by Biopolymer Innovations.
