Stern Shapiro Weissberg & Garin LLP is a litigation firm with a reputation for superb and effective advocacy. Our firm's versatile partners are equally at home in the civil and criminal legal worlds. We have compiled an impressive record of persuasion in arguing to juries in both state and federal courts and to judges at every trial and appellate level, including the United States Supreme Court. These results have been achieved by applying our accumulated experience and skill and by insisting on standards for which we have become well-known: thorough preparation, relentless pursuit of the client's objectives and compelling advocacy. We draw on our varied experience to craft imaginative solutions to intractable problems. Our clients and cases extend over a diverse range including complex criminal litigation, employment law, environmental litigation, representation of attorneys and other professionals, plaintiffs' medical malpractice, personal injury, and product liability, business litigation, civil rights, and consumer class action litigation, and academic law. We often act as co-counsel or consultants to other firms in areas of our expertise. Our firm's small size ensures close personal attention by an experienced partner in virtually every case. Also, the small-scale operation mandates that we marshal resources effectively. Overall, our clients receive the highest quality representation at reasonable rates. The firm has handled numerous high profile cases. This experience equips us to manage the difficult predicaments that intense publicity entails. In those cases we have demonstrated an equal ability to articulate a client's position in a public forum, where that is required, or to resolve a case through discreet and confidential negotiation.

Burr & Smith LLP

http://www.burrandsmithlaw.com

Burr & Smith, L.L.P. specializes in representing employees in wage and overtime pay controversies; minorities opposing discrimination on the basis of race, sex, color, religion, national origin, disability and/or age in employment or public accommodations such as restaurants or housing, as well in litigation opposing denial of civil rights and/or voting rights. Burr & Smith, L.L.P. has litigated and resolved several Equal Pay Act and collective actions and multiparty equal pay, overtime pay, and minimum wage pay cases in which the settlements exceeded one million dollars. Our attorneys have litigated in nationally recognized impact cases. In July 2003, the NAACP presented its Foot Soldiers' Award to Charles Burr and Sam Smith in tribute to their "enduring pursuit of justice," their "advocacy on behalf of many who are without means of redress" and for "leaving footprints on the sands of time that others can follow." In June 2000 the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil and Urban Rights gave its Outstanding Achievement in Public Accommodations Law award to the lawyers of Burr & Smith, L.L.P. for their representation of African American plaintiffs who experienced discriminatory treatment at the Adam's Mark Hotel when they participated in their Black College Reunion. The Adam's Mark Hotels paid $2.1 million dollars to settle plaintiffs' claims. Out of this fund, $600,000 was awarded to four historically black colleges in Florida for scholarships or business management programs. Charles Burr and Sam Smith, along with co-counsel, obtained certification for more than 160,000 female current and former employees of Publix Super Markets who sued as a class to oppose discrimination in various job benefits, including promotions, allocation of hours, job assignments, job advancement, pay and employment opportunities. In 1997, the court approved settlement for $81.5 million in monetary relief and extensive injunctive relief. In April 1999, Burr & Smith, L.L.P. successfully obtained an injunction enabling the Florida Conference of NAACP Branches and three individual plaintiffs to block a traffic management plan proposed by the City of Daytona Beach which would have prohibited vehicles from crossing the bridges leading to the Beach during an annual event known as the Black College Reunion. The attorneys of Burr & Smith, L.L.P. successfully argued on behalf of the plaintiffs that the proposed plan violated several provisions of the U.S. Constitution, including the dormant commerce clause, the Equal Protection Clause and the First Amendment. In 2006, Marguerite Longoria became a partner in Burr & Smith. Marguerite is specialty board certified in Labor and Employment Law by the Florida Bar's Board of Legal Specialization and Education. She specializes in class and collective action litigation involving overtime and minimum wage, executive compensation issues and employment discrimination. In 2006 and 2007, Marguerite was named by her peers as a SuperLawyer in Florida Monthly/ Law and Politics Magazine. Marguerite serves on the executive board of the National Employment Lawyer's Association ("NELA") and the Executive Council of the Labor and Employment Section of the Florida Bar. The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience. We will also provide you on request with additional information on any other statements contained in this website.

Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia

http://www.pilcop.org

The Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia was founded in 1974 by the Philadelphia Bar Association and is one of eight local affiliates of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The Lawyers' Committee was established in 1963 by the leadership of the American Bar Association at the request of President John F. Kennedy. The Law Center's mission is to advance the Constitutional promise of equal citizenship to all persons irrespective of race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, gender or poverty through the provision of legal and technical assistance. We use public education, continuing education of our clients and client organizations, research, negotiation and, when necessary, the courts to achieve systemic reforms that advance the central goals of self-advocacy, social justice and equal protection of the law for all members of society. The Law Center believes that full and equal participation in our social, economic and political systems is possible only when all members of the community have access to the full resources of the legal system so that they have the power to deal on equal terms with public and private institutions. A principal focus of our work is to secure systematic reforms through impact litigation. Towards this goal, we primarily represent individuals and organizations in Philadelphia and throughout the nation in civil rights cases that will benefit significant numbers of persons. The victories we secure in the courtroom result in policy changes and reforms that end abusive and discriminatory practices against thousands of minorities, children, persons with disabilities and other historically disenfranchised groups. We focus our efforts in the areas of: the delivery of health care services to children, education funding and quality, the rights of persons with disabilities, environmental health and justice, fair housing, equal employment discrimination and urban policing. The Law Center's representation and collaboration with premiere local, national and international organizations have allowed us to maximize our impact and earned us a stellar reputation in the field of civil rights.

Public Justice Center

http://www.publicjustice.org

The Public Justice Center was established in 1985 by professor Michael Millemann and attorney Nevett Steele as a nonprofit legal services organization dedicated to protecting and expanding the rights of the poor. Frustrated by the lack of systemic-impact legal work in the state of Maryland, the founders formed the PJC in order to bring widespread, long-term reform to the systems that cause injustice for the economically disadvantaged. During the last 22 years, the PJC has seen steady growth in size, organizational stability, and professional expertise. Our staff is highly qualified and has the experience and ability to engage in long-term projects. In addition to staff, the PJC's resources are supplemented by thousands of volunteer hours from the private bar. The Board of Directors has 30 members, representing a wealth of experience in law, medicine, public policy, education, and community and labor organizations. The PJC is a leader in public interest law reform in Maryland and in the mid-Atlantic region, increasingly taking on projects of national import. Look at our current focus areas to see the difference we're making.

The Transgender Law Center (TLC) is a civil rights organization advocating for transgender communities. Every day we connect transgender people and their families to technically sound and culturally competent legal services, increase acceptance and enforcement of laws and policies that support California's transgender communities, and work to change laws and systems that fail to incorporate the needs and experiences of transgender people. TLC utilizes direct legal services, public policy advocacy, and educational opportunities to advance the rights and safety of diverse transgender communities. TLC uses the term "transgender" to represent all of the innumerable genders and forms of gender expression that fall within and outside of stereotypical gender norms. Prison Law Office

http://www.prisonlaw.com

The Prison Law Office provides free legal services to California state prisoners, and occasionally to California state parolees. Our assistance is generally limited to cases regarding conditions of confinement. Further, the office does not typically assist or represent prisoners in lawsuits in which money damages are the primary objective. Instead, the office focuses on cases in which a change in conditions is sought. The office attempts to resolve such cases informally, if possible (by advocating to prison officials), or through formal litigation. With regard to condition of confinement matters, the decision to assist with any particular case depends on the issue or problem presented, the chance of success, the amount of time and resource necessary to properly assist, the office's resources, staff availability and caseload. The Prison Law Office publishes and periodically updates The California State Prisoners Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Prison and Parole Law. Click here for Ordering Information. We are also happy to provide self-help and informational materials to prisoners, some of which are published on this website, including a habeas corpus manual, parolee rights manual, and personal injury lawsuit packet, as well as material regarding administrative remedies, divorce, guard brutality, immigration, loss of personal property, plea bargains, release dates, workers' compensation, and worktime credits. If you or a family member have an issue that you believe we can assist with, please feel free to contact our office. Letters concerning individual prisoners and prison conditions can be addressed to: Prison Law Office General Delivery San Quentin, CA 94964. Due to the large number of inquiries, we cannot accept telephone calls from prisoners and their families.

California Rural Legal Assistance , Inc.

http://www.crla.org

Since 1965, CRLA has raised its powerful voice in the courtrooms, in the classrooms, in the fields, and in the legislative halls of California. We have shown farm workers and other poor people that the law can be a friend and that those responsible for enforcing the laws can and should be called to account. But it is not enough to be a civil defender. Through our example, our fight and our voice, we must also be teachers so that the poor may become aware of their rights, guarding and wielding them as symbols of inclusion, participation and respect. It is this act of fighting back that empowers, bringing the beginning of hope, the beginning of confidence, the beginning of pride. This is our wealth. This is our people's wealth.
