Estyn is involved in a wide range of educational and training activity. Estyn is responsible for inspecting: Early years provision in the non-maintained sector; Primary schools; Secondary schools; Special schools (including independent special schools); Pupil referral units; Independent schools; Further education; Voluntary youth agencies; Local education authorities (LEAs); Teacher education and training; Work-Based Learning; Careers Wales companies; The education, guidance and training elements of Jobcentre Plus Programmes; Adult Community-Based Learning. Some of these statutory duties are met through work done exclusively by Estyn's own staff, at times supported by additional inspectors and peer assessors. Other work is done by independent inspectors who inspect individual schools and nursery settings under contract to Estyn.

Historic Scotland

8. Historic Scotland is an executive agency of the Scottish Government and is directly accountable to Scottish Ministers and through them to the Scottish Parliament. The agency is charged with safeguarding the nation's historic environment through statutory protection, research and investment. Since the agency was created in 1991 it has issued over £170 million for the care and maintenance of the historic environment and this has generated well over £400 million in match funding.
