The Department of Human Services operates six state psychiatric hospitals, seven centers for persons with developmental disabilities and three residential treatment facilities for children. DHS also oversees the administration of Medicaid, welfare and other social benefits. It provides social services for roughly one of every eight people in New Jersey.
