The Derrick Thomas Academy is a school that takes pride in the efforts to raise student achievement through research and standard based curriculum. DTA is building a sports program to give more inner city youth an opportunity to play sports and represent their school at the same time. DTA currently has programs in place for football, cheerleading and basketball. Over 200 students participated in each sport and the school looks to attract between 150 and 200 students for soccer. DTA is currently putting the finishing touches on the baseball and soccer programs. To help DTA encourage students to participate and heighten the interest in soccer, the Wizards will donate Kicks for Kids tickets to all students and parents interested in signing up for DTA soccer.

Classical Charter School

http://www.classicalcharter.com

Classical School provides an excellent education through an academically rigorous curriculum. The foundational guide is E.D. Hirsch's Core Knowledge Sequence. Mastery is emphasized in all subject areas. Students are taught to strive for personal excellence in all areas of their lives. We promote knowledge-centered education, cultural literacy, and the values of a democratic society. Educational justice at Classical School means equal access to the basic skills and content needed for future learning. We are committed to a universal mastery for all our students. With the support of the school, staff, and parents, the student is expected to strive for academic growth and is held accountable for his or her schoolwork and behavior. Individual effort and ability determine student academic success. The Core Knowledge Sequence is knowledge-based and includes science; mathematics; language arts; classic literature; English; history and geography; music; and visual arts. A knowledge-based curriculum emphasizes the importance of learning a broad, contextual body of common knowledge. While the Core Knowledge Sequence is wide-ranging in overall scope, it also stipulates the learning of a specific, sequenced, shared, and solid body of knowledge at each grade level. The specificity of the curriculum ensures consistency within each grade level and prevents repetition and gaps in content from year to year. Each level develops a shared base of background knowledge from which to build future learning. Instruction focuses on unabridged classic literature, literary analysis, grammar, and composition after students achieve skill mastery in reading. Writing is emphasized in all grades and content areas. Starting in kindergarten, students receive accelerated instruction in reading and spelling using SRA's Direct Instruction program at the skill level appropriate for them. The Saxon math program is used for math instruction. Mastery in all skills is emphasized. The Shurley Method is used to teach strong grammar skills. Spanish language instruction is provided daily in grades kindergarten through eight. Instruction is delivered in Spanish and aims for mastery in aural, oral, and written proficiency. Students in grades K - 8 participate in physical education and music classes as well. Orchestra is available for students in grades 4 - 8 and band for students in grades 6 - 8. The students at Classical School are challenged and stimulated through this rich curriculum. Students who complete our program through the eighth grade will have achieved strong skills in reading, math, English grammar, speech, Spanish, and self-discipline. They will also have received a solid common knowledge of American and world history, geography, literature, physical and life sciences, and the fine arts.

Rocky Mountain Deaf School

http://www.rmdeafschool.net

We recognize that there are multiple ways that children may be intelligent and we are committed to supporting all forms. The school will focus on the 7-R's: reading, writing, arithmetic, respect for the Deaf child, the rights and responsiblities of citizenship, and recognition of Deafness as a positive state of being. We have expectations for our students equivilent to those of any other child in school. Because of this, we will use a curriculum designed for hearing children. We focus on developing critical thinking skills, not a core of face-based knowledge.

Eagle Rock School

http://www.eaglerockschool.org

Eagle Rock School is a full-scholarship high school for students who have not experienced success in traditional academic programs and a low-cost professional development center for adults. The school opened in the fall of 1993 as an initiative of the American Honda Education Corporation, a nonprofit subsidiary of the American Honda Motor Company. " Like many high schools around the country, Eagle Rock School in Estes Park, Colorado, has a community service requirement for graduation. Unlike many high schools, one of the focal points of the Eagle Rock curriculum is service, being of "use." As a year-round, residential high school, we have many opportunities to put this ideal into practice. Our students document this requirement by completing a service-learning portfolio that includes several written compositions. The task for one of these compositions is to write a personal philosophy of service to others. This is just a small sample of the many thoughtful essays written by generations of Eagle Rock students. Their words help me to celebrate the ethic of service to others, and their deeds are most certainly helping to weave the fine fabric of our school community."

East Mountain High School

http://www.eastmountainhigh.net

East Mountain High School (EMHS) is a charter public school located in Sandia Park, NM, east of Albuquerque. It is in its sixth year of operation, with freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior classes, and approximately 330 students. The dream for a community-based high school in the East Mountains has taken years to become a reality. Citizens with common goals came together in the mid 1990s seeking to develop a community-based high school to serve the needs of this rural mountain area. Many of these individuals actively lobbied the NM Legislature to implement the charter school concept in New Mexico. With the passage of the Charter School Act of 1999, the community group worked diligently to develop a charter application that resulted in the approval of the EMHS charter in November 1999. EMHS successfully completed an in-depth accreditation review by the NM State Department of Education, and received an Exemplary rating. Student Terra Nova test scores for each year have exceeded the district and national averages in every category. The EMHS Foundation, a NM non-profit 501 organization, has been formed to hold the 26 acres donated for the school campus and to obtain and hold the 20-year mortgage secured for financing construction of the facility. EMHS makes a monthly lease payment to service the mortgage debt; the payment comes from the operating budget. EMHS occupies four new buildings expressly built for the school. As a charter school, EMHS does not benefit from capital funding available to other public schools.
