Barron University

http://www.gobu.org

Originally founded in 1997 in Palestine, Israel and the U.K., Barron University began offering its special doctoral programs in the United States in 2002. Since then, student enrollment has continued to expand throughout the U.S. as well as in Europe, South America, Canada and Australia. Its Dean, Dr. Colbey Forman, in recognizing the unmet need for professional training in the areas of alternative holistic medicine and psychology, developed a program that massively accelerates the learning process and provides the resources and training that have until now been unavailable solely within one program.

Shiatsu School of Canada Inc.

http://www.shiatsucanada.com

In 1986 Kaz and Yasuko Kamiya founded the SSC in response to growing demand for high quality training in shiatsu therapy. Canadians from all walks of life were becoming increasingly concerned about the potential side effects of drugs and were looking for non-invasive ways of dealing with illness. People from all walks of life wanted to take their health and well-being back into their own hands. Shiatsu helped them do this and, as more and more people heard about shiatsu, the need for a high-quality school became evident. On April 2, 1986, the school was registered and approved as a private Career College under the Private Career College Act. In September 1986, the Shiatsu School of Canada's first 2200-hour program began. The Shiatsu School of Canada is now one of Canada's leading shiatsu school and continues to offer a career-training program leading to a diploma in shiatsu therapy. The Shiatsu Therapy Diploma program starts every September and can be taken through a full-time (two years) or a part-time (three years) study option. The SSC's first class graduated in 1988, with a graduating class every year after that. Since we have been offering continuous quality education since 1986, we can truly offer an experienced faculty and a proven curriculum. Our faculty is comprised of shiatsu therapists, Ph.D.'s, acupuncturists, practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine, nutritionists, professionals in anatomy, physiology, pathology, psychology, kinesiology, and other fields of health care, as well as specialists in business, communications and ethics. All our science instructors have at least a Master's degree in their field. The career of shiatsu demands the heart, knowledge, skill and clinical experience that a 2200-hour program in a Private Career College can deliver. The diploma program at the SSC is the oldest continuously operating 2200-hour program in Canada. We offer students a solid grounding in both Eastern and Western medicine, including anatomy, physiology and pathology. Working in the West, students must be able to communicate with Western medical professionals who refer clients to them. They must also be able to communicate with clients who think in terms of Western medicine. An understanding of Western medicine, coupled with a strong background in Oriental medicine, strengthens the shiatsu therapist's practice on every level. The SSC operates ethically and dependably, balancing our respect for the traditions of shiatsu with a responsibility to grow and innovate. The school has no religious affiliations and welcomes people from all backgrounds and walks of life. By its commitment to high ethical standards, quality in faculty and curriculum, and service to students and the community, the SSC has played a significant role in promoting shiatsu nationally and internationally. The 2200-hour program offered at the Shiatsu School of Canada is the highest standard in the world, comparable to that offered in Japan itself. Graduates of the SSC are able to apply for licenses, registration and/or certification all around the world. Currently we have graduates working across Canada and in the United States, Denmark, Mexico, England, Austria, Israel, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, etc. At the Shiatsu School of Canada we believe that the power to change your life is in your hands. And we have the track record, the knowledge, and the commitment to help make your study of shiatsu as rewarding as you want it to be.

Academy of Somatic Healing Arts

http://www.ashamassage.com

ASHA was founded in 1991 by Jim and Becky Gabriel with a vision to add Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) to massage training. They were inspired to offer NMT because this form of pain relief and injury treatment had healed Jim when nothing else seemed to work. They were committed to creating better massage therapists through a more comprehensive technique curriculum that included Swedish, Sports Massage and NMT. This curriculum was more comprehensive than others at that time. Today, NMT is widely taught and practiced. ASHA's current owners, Dr. Stan and Mary Dawson, bought ASHA in the fall of 2003 and continue the commitment to excellence. Under the leadership of the Dawsons, the program has expanded dramatically. More hours have been added for Swedish Massage and Anatomy and Physiology as well as new courses like Asian Theory, Polarity Therapy and Mind/Body Integration. The redesigned Sports Massage course, based on insights from massage therapists in the Olympic movement, prepares ASHA students to work with everyone's health, not just world-class athletes. The advanced techniques taught in the Sports Massage course are usually only available in the continuing education programs. Since joining ASHA, Dr. Stan Dawson has been the driving force behind the innovations in ASHA's programs. He authored the holistic model that underlies ASHA's educational process. He is a pioneer in the area of holistic health. After graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1975, he was the first doctor in the southeast with massage therapists in his practice, the first to practice with an MD, the first to do conjoint sessions with clinical psychologists, and the first to set up a holistic health care and education center, all of which he did before 1980, when holistic health was not a well-known concept. In 2005, ASHA's curriculum expanded to 840 hours becoming an even more inclusive, comprehensive training for Massage Therapists. You will now receive a massage table and all supplies needed to become a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT). If you attend ASHA in the Day program, you could graduate in as little as 8 1/2 months with training in Swedish, Sports Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy. The Night/Weekend format takes 11 1/2 months. The Weekend only program takes 17 months.

Vassar College

http://www.vassar.edu

Vassar is developing a database application for digitized art images (See the article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, January 24, 2003). We'd be glad to compare notes with anyone else tackling this challenge. Going live this semester will be an online faculty elections system. It was programmed in-house to replicate the particularities of Vassar elections methodology-including nominations and voting for the whole range of faculty committees and offices. One of its interesting features is that it stores individual faculty ballots-in-progress, allowing members to review and revise their returns until the election deadline.
