Consortium for Open Learning

http://www.distlearn.com

The Consortium for Open Learning provides a number services for its members. It is a major source of information on many key aspects of open learning and related open-learning opportunities. The Consortium provides a network for communication and interactivity among all of its Members, Associate Members, and Representatives to the Consortium. The COL Administrative and Faculty Listservs are an invaluable source of the latest advances, ideas, feedback, and opportunities in the open-learning arena. The present major area of concentration is online instruction. In addition to providing a network of communication and interaction in the broad area of open learning, the Consortium for Open Learning continues to provide major services for telecourse acquisition and utilization. It disseminates information regarding upcoming series and courses in production, provides preview materials of available courses which include outlines, faculty and student study guides, and sample video lessons with duplication and distribution for campus review. It duplicates and distributes tapes to stations, cable systems and colleges, provides dubbing service to colleges for student rental tapes, and provides ancillary services to member colleges such as centralized information and logistics involving broadcasters, publishers, and colleges. COL negotiates contracts for telecourse leases, broadcast time on stations and cable systems, and audio-visual rights for permanent collections. COL also monitors and provides members with information relating to current telecommunications developments, issues, and activities. In addition, a committee structure is proved for discussion and decision-making pertaining to curriculum, marketing, rural college issues, ITFS systems, satellite distribution, new technologies, and cable developments. Workshops and seminars are developed and scheduled and board meetings are held in conjunction with the annual conferences of professional organizations. As an example, recently, in conjunction with our board meeting, we held a three-track Open Learning Colloquium with one track for Administrators/CEO's, another for faculty, and a third for staff. It was very well received and praised highly by all participants. In addition to these standard services, De Anza's Beth Grobman Burruss, Past Coordinator, Distance Learning Center, DeAnza College, feels strongly about the following additional benefits of Consortium membership: Distance education administrators and instructors are often a very small minority at their institution. Distance education philosophy and methodology are often extremely difficult for "traditional" educators to understand. Without support, it's easy for the leaders of distance education programs to feel alienated and unpopular. The value of meeting colleagues from other institutions who have similar experiences is tremendous. This structure, which enables us to share problems, resources and solutions with others, is one of the primary ingredients which has enabled us to have a truly successful and outstanding program.

Durham Nativity School

http://www.durhamnativity.org

DNS is committed to bringing an education to socio-economically disadvantaged and at-risk boys who might not otherwise have access to a quality education in East Durham. The school provides the boys with emotional, social, moral and intellectual support through small classes, an extended day and a year-round program. We consider our mission to be an eleven year process with our students. Our faculty and staff work to help our students become young men ready for the rigors of college preparatory high schools and, consequently colleges. Our Board of Directors has also adopted a high school tuition assistance program that will allow us to continue supporting our graduates that attend a college preparatory high school that does not offer a full scholarship. This funding will ultimately become an endowment fund that will subsidize their high school education when needed. In addition, the DNS Volunteer/Graduate Support Coordinator will continue to follow each graduate's progress throughout his high school and college years in order to further emphasize our commitment to our students. It is our ultimate desire to have our DNS graduates return and serve this community following their college graduation. Our administration will continue to put forth our eleven year commitment to our student's parents and would urge them to recognize that process with their ongoing parental/guardian support of volunteerism. In the non-sectarian Nativity model our students are enrolled without regard to race, color, religion or ethnicity, but all must qualify for the federal meal program. Above all, the boys and their families must be committed to our rigorous schedule. The school is not tuition driven, but completely dependant on private donation. We require active parental involvement and hire faculty and staff fully dedicated to our mission. Durham Nativity School is educating boys who will break across barriers to become tomorrow's leaders and role models within the community.
