The Bosch Institute was established to: discover the origins of human disease by furthering knowledge in the fields of biology and medicine; improve methods of preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases, as well as promoting health in human beings and animals; enhance selective areas of excellence in both basic and applied biomedical research; encourage research of international standing in both existing and emerging areas of biomedical research; support and encourage educational activities relating to the research interests of the Institute; disseminate, within and outside the State of New South Wales, information concerning the work of the Institute; and provide outstanding training for junior scientists in the intellectual, practical and ethical aspects of biomedical research. Research in the Bosch Institute is carried out in over 50 laboratories, each headed by a senior scientist and containing several researchers and students. Their work is described in detail in the research section of the site. The staff of the Bosch Institute include many scientists with an international reputation for the high quality of their research. Fellows of the Australian Academy include Professors David Cook, Maxwell Bennett and David Allen. Research carried out by members of the Institute has advanced our knowledge of many important human diseases, including: alcoholism Alzheimer's Disease asthma atherosclerosis birth defects cataract cystic fibrosis diabetes heart attack hypertension inflammatory bowel disease infertility leukaemia malaria memory impairment motor neuron disease muscular dystrophy night blindness organ transplant rejection osteoporosis Parkinson's Disease progressive supranuclear palsy retinopathy of prematurity schizophrenia skin cancer West Nile virus Over the next few years, the Strategic Plan of the Institute includes a commitment to develop a major research project in Tissue Engineering within the Organ & tissue replacement Research Theme. This is the science that concerns itself with areas like transplantation, stem cell biology, wound healing, biomaterials, and other related approaches to the treatment of human diseases.

University of Maryland , Baltimore

Pennington Biomedical Research Center

Opened in 1988, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center now houses 14 research laboratories, 17 core service laboratories, inpatient and outpatient clinics, a research kitchen, an administrative area and more than $20 million in technologically advanced equipment. Located in Baton Rouge, the Center was expanded in 1993 to include the C.B. Pennington Jr. Conference Center, residence apartments, and an exercise and fitness facility. More than 70 faculty members and over 600 physicians, scientists and support personnel focus their research efforts on six key areas: Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome, Experimental Obesity, Functional Foods, Nutrition and Chronic Diseases, Health and Performance Enhancement, and Nutrition and the Brain.

Eastern Virginia Medical School
