Salon 613 & Spa resides at 613 N 3rd St. in Bismarck, North Dakota, in a historical Queen Anne Victorian home built by the Ramond family back in 1875. While the Ramond family first built the home, they were not the first to live in it. While the Ramonds were in New York in 1876, General George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Calvary were preparing to ride into history at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Following the deaths of General Custer and his troops, many of the soldiers' wives and family members were moved into the quarters outside of Fort Abraham Lincoln before being sent back east to be with their families. In 1876, the Ramond Home holds the historic distinction of housing Libby Custer and five other wives, becoming the very first people to call this building home. In 1985, 110 years later, the building was in a state of ruin after having been converted into a series of compact apartments in the mid 1970s. The interior of the house had been destroyed, and the exterior was in serious disrepair. Tree limbs had damaged several sections of the roof, the windows were cracked and faded and fascia and soffits were hanging off of the building. The once proud Ramond Home had become little more than an afterthought to the citizens of Bismarck. When Galpin Company, Inc. moved its offices from Minneapolis to Bismarck in the mid 1980s, Loran Galpin saw the building and realized it was a one of a kind architectural structure, even in its rundown condition. Loran, with two partners, purchased the property in 1985. In the spring of 1986, Loran began the reconstruction, preserving the Victorian style of the home and adding a lofty wing to the rear and east of the building. After the design and renovation of 1986, Loran and his partners remained as owners but designed and leased the building to Bobby Gomes. Gomes converted the building into Frankly Scarlet salon, which ran successfully for ten years. In 2003, Loran made an offer to buy the salon and, in May, acquired the ownership rights to the building from his two partners. Plans were set to open a new business offering creative opportunities and a setting unlike any other in the Midwest, one that centered around key requirements such as quality, creativity, employee respect, job satisfaction and a unique and personal approach to customer service. Presently, Salon 613 & Spa has nine stylists, plus a training station for new talent, two massage therapists, two spa estheticians, one of which is a registered nurse, two receptionist and Loran Galpin as the owner director and visionary for the salon and spa's future. The history of the Ramond House is as impressive as it is extensive. But the future for Salon 613 & Spa is every bit as enduring. We're here to stay.
