Porchlight , Inc.

http://www.porchlightinc.org

Porchlight was created on January 1, 2004 by the merger of two well-established and successful non-profit providers of emergency shelter and low-cost housing in Dane County: Community Housing & Services, Inc. (CHAS) and Transitional Houisng, Inc. (THI) Together we are largest supplier of low-cost housing to single adults in Dane County. Porchlight comprises two emergency shelters (one for men and one for men and women suffering from serious mental illnesses), 172 single room or efficiency units and 55 family units. Porchlight is largest single non-profit supplier of low-cost housing in Dane County. We are extremely excited about this unique opportunity to effectively and efficiently provide services to those most in need in our community. Through the merger we can provide a truly integrated network of emergency shelter, housing, support service and community-living opportunities for homeless households. The variety of housing, support service and community-living opportunities allows us to effectively assist residents and program participants in overcoming the causes of their homelessness so they can maintain housing. Maintenance of housing reduces homelessness, saving valuable resources invested in shelters, reducing the tremendous costs homeless individuals for this community and avoiding the devastating impact of homelessness on the households themselves. Integrated financial, medical and legal services have long been provided by single enterprises for the most sophisticated consumers. It is now time for us as a community to provide the same level of integrated services to the least sophisticated and those most in need in our community. Through the merger, Porchlight is able to provide housing opportunities ranging from emergency shelters to transitional housing and ultimately permanent housing all within a single agency. Greater housing opportunities and more effective and efficient service to those most in need in our community, thereby reducing homelessness, these are what Porchlight is all about.

New Hope Housing , Inc.

http://www.newhopehousing.org

Since 1978 New Hope Housing has been providing a comprehensive, innovative array of services to homeless families and single adults. We serve only persons who are homeless; New Hope Housing is the oldest and largest provider of shelter beds in northern Virginia. Grounded in our vision, mission and core values, we offer innovative responses to homelessness in the spirit of hope and hospitality, taking in anyone in need and not giving up until we have exhausted all possible avenues of change. New Hope Housing's philosophy and approach to services are grounded in two programs that are foundational to our way of operating. The first is The Mandt System®, a systematic training program that teaches the use of a graded system of alternatives to escalating conflict. The Mandt System is based on the principle that all people have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. New Hope Housing has certified Mandt trainers on its staff and provides Mandt training for all staff in order to create an environment of dignity and respect, resulting in a sense of hope and hospitality for residents. Our second foundational program is Out of Poverty (OOP), a structured curriculum designed to foster personal transformation. Developed by an educator and a social worker, the curriculum fosters the mental, emotional and behavioral changes necessary to intervene in the poverty cycle and build a different future. The program uses a group process and helps each individual to accept responsibility for his/her life experiences and to develop methods of moving beyond those experiences while learning new behaviors. The OOP lessons include self-management, work relevant values and self-determination, and tools such as action planning, mental rehearsal, understanding personal responsibility, and the keys to negotiating differences.

Hunger Task Force Inc

http://www.hungertaskforce.org

Hunger Task Force has a rich tradition of service as both an advocacy organization and a food bank. HISTORY For more than 30 years we've been a voice for the hungry, promoting socially sound policies that could end hunger in our community. We were founded in 1974 by a group of concerned parents worried about children going to school hungry. Then, in 1977, we responded to community need by opening a food bank to distribute free food to local charities that feed the hungry. A DUAL PURPOSE We are unique in that we have dual objectives - advocacy and food banking. Food banking alone cannot end hunger: advocacy in the absence of charity is less effective. Our expert and knowledgeable staff use them together to combat hunger more effectively. ADVOCATING FOR HUNGER RELIEF PROGRAMS We are committed to advocating for programs that help ensure people have enough food to feed themselves and their families. Since 1974, we have consistently worked with legislators and administrators to expand and to improve access to programs such as the Women Infants and Children (WIC) Program, the Food Stamp Program, and the School Breakfast and School Lunch Programs. You can help us advocate for common sense solutions to ending hunger. DISTRIBUTING FOOD FOR FREE When we distribute food to the pantries, homeless shelters and meal programs in our network, we do it for free. Resources at community programs are already scarce , to charge fees to obtain food would cripple their ability to serve the poor. And if we got into the business of profiting from our work or even selling food, we could never fully commit ourselves to ending hunger. To learn more about how we bring food into the community click here. MISSION STATEMENT Hunger Task Force believes that every person has a right to adequate food obtained with dignity. Hunger Task Force works to prevent hunger and malnutrition by providing food to people in need today and by promoting social policies to achieve food security tomorrow.
