Health Clinics

La Cooperativa

http://www.lacooperativa.org

La Cooperativa's services are rural. Community based, volunteer boards and advisory committees, who include farmworkers, provide policy direction. Members provide services in accessible locations in farmworker and rural communities. Services sites are linked to WIA One Stops and other service providers. As Title I section 167 grantees, members are mandatory partners for implementation of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Offices have bilingual and bicultural staffs that are familiar with the farmworker community. Services are customer driven, flexible, holistic and comprehensive. La Cooperativa and its member agencies have provided the state of California with an efficient and responsive service delivery network. The network has been mobilized in time of crisis to provide emergency service to the thousands of farmworkers and the poor rural communities effected by the devastating crop freezes of 1990, 1998 and 1999, and the floods of 1997 and 1998.

New Alternatives for Children Inc

http://www.newalternativesforchildren.org

New Alternatives for Children (NAC) is a not-for-profit health and social services agency whose exclusive mission is to serve children with disabilities and their families. We provide comprehensive health and social services to support family preservation, reunification, or adoption. NAC facilitates the timely discharge of children with disabilities from hospitals, where they may have lived well beyond medical need. Within the community, our goal is to provide and coordinate comprehensive services for our clients' physical, social, educational, recreational and healthcare needs. Comprehensive health and social services are offered through two major program divisions at NAC: the Preventive Services Program and the Foster Care and Adoption Program. Our Preventive Services Program provides comprehensive family support services including parent support groups, a Sibling Program, and Partners in Parenting (PIP), an after-care preventive services program for families. Within our Foster Care and Adoption Program exists the Homefinding Department and the Post Legal Adoption Network (PLAN). We help families who are involved in the foster care system to reunify and we find adoptive homes for children whose parents can no longer take care of their needs. NAC knows that it can be overwhelming for caregivers to negotiate the complex systems of New York City to find services for children with disabilities. NAC can help open a world of opportunities and possibilities for children with disabilities and assist the entire family in reaching its potential.

FUNDECI

http://www.fundeci.org

The Technical Assistance Program, originally founded by Arquitectos y Planificadores en Ayuda a Nicaragua (APSNICA), a U.S. non-profit organization, is now operated by FUNDECI. A major goal of FUNDECI is to promote a relationship of mutual respect between the people of the U.S. and those of Nicaragua. FUNDECI is a private non-profit, non-partisan association, founded in 1972 to help relieve the housing crisis in the aftermath of the ‘72 earthquake. When the Revolution occurred in 1979 the members of FUNDECI joined the revolutionary government in such positions as Foreign Relations Minister in the United States and members of the national bank, Banco de la Vivienda. FUNDECI was then reactivated as a non-government organization in the 1990s in response to the tremendous need among Nicaraguan grassroots communities for help in defending and expanding some of the democratic gains of the Revolution. FUNDECI's main objective is strengthening community organizations so that they can meet the needs of the people in poverty stricken areas. In addition to providing resources such as equipment, materials and labor, FUNDECI seeks to empower the Nicaraguan people, especially women, through leadership programs, skills training, and assistance in housing, public health, education and legal aid. An important component of FUNDECI's work is to provide community organizations with the technical knowledge necessary for the implementation of local development projects. The Technical Assistance Program helps achieve this goal. The Technical Assistance Program operates out of the FUNDECI office in Managua, which is responsible for providing technical assistance, recruiting volunteers and facilitating volunteers' work in Nicaragua. FUNDECI also provides a channel for on-going support after the volunteer's work in Nicaragua is completed.

The Fregenet Foundation

http://www.fregenetfoundation.org

The Fregenet Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing early childhood education to children from low-income families in Ethiopia. The first Fregenet School (Fregenet Kidan Lehitsanat) opened its doors in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the fall of 2004, and enrolled 31 children of ages 4 to 6 from a small and impoverished community in Addis Abeba. The vision for the school was inspired by Fregenet Tafesse Woubshet, an Ethiopian-American, who died in 2003 before she could realize her dream of returning to Ethiopia to help children. Thanks to generous benefactors, the first batch of students has completed three years of schooling and graduated successfully to second grade on July 14, 2006. In the school's fourth year of operation, the number of students enrolled has grown to 140. According to the World Bank, 58% of Ethiopians age 15 and above cannot read or write, compared to 37% in neighboring countries. For Ethiopian women, that number could be as high as 75%. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Education figures for the 2002/03 school year, 2% of kindergarten age children are in school. There are no public kindergarten schools in Ethiopia. In the capital city, Addis Ababa, where the number of private schools has grown in recent years, only 33.1% of kindergarten-age children are in school. The Foundation has plans to expand and open additional schools, and cultivate partnerships with health agencies, community organizations, orphanages, and agencies that can sponsor students. Close contact with families, sponsors, and orphanages will be maintained to monitor progress and assure success. A long-term plan envisages inviting alumni to return to the school to serve as tutors and help in various capacities. The Fregenet Foundation is a non-profit corporation committed to non-discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender or disability.

Inner-City Muslim Action Network

http://www.imancentral.org

IMAN was formed in 1995 and incorporated in 1997 by Muslim students, community residents and leaders responding to the pervasive symptoms of inner-city poverty and abandonment. IMAN sought to create a community organization driven by the spiritual ideals of community service, social justice and human compassion. Within two short years, a diverse network of students, residents and various institutions throughout the Chicagoland area joined IMAN in working to develop a full-fledged community organization that sought to embody the principles of those lofty ideals. Organizers and volunteers strove to make IMAN a holistic community organization that offered a range of programming and services while organizing to affect positive social change. While led by Muslims, IMAN sought from the outset to work for and along side community residents of all ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds: a commitment clearly reflected in the constituency that IMAN serves and organizes with through its many programs and projects.
