People Living Through Cancer Inc

http://www.pltc.org

PLTC's organizational development, as well as its services, are guided by a formal strategic planning process that involves staff, Board of Directors, and other volunteers. The first five-year strategic plan was published in the summer of 1991. Accompanied by the organization's first business plan, it was followed by a burst of growth, including a substantial increase in the number of people served, a significant increase in the organization's budget, and a period of financial stability that has been sustained since then. The second five-year plan was published in 1997, followed by PLTC's current plan, published in 2002. Since PLTC was established as a 501(c) 3 corporation in 1984, volunteerism has been its foundation. The organization could not have sustained the scope and quality of its programs, nor the organizational structure it needed, without hundreds of active volunteers working in a wide variety of capacities. Many dedicated and skilled volunteers and staff members have contributed to the successes of the organization. In the early years of the organization, there was no paid staff. In 2001, the organization had six employees. What is most important about the history of People Living Through Cancer is that its staff and volunteers touch people's lives on a daily basis and are willing to listen to their concerns, look into their eyes and take whatever time is needed to be there with someone in crisis because of a cancer diagnosis or recurrence.

Cancer Lifeline

http://www.cancerlifeline.org

Cancer Lifeline was founded in 1973 by a cancer patient who could not find the community resources and support she needed to help her "live with it." From the start, the mission of Cancer Lifeline has been to optimize the quality of life for all people living with cancer. We became a United Way agency in 1975. Gifts and grants provide most of our support, enabling Cancer Lifeline to serve more than 9,000 people a year. Although everyone's experience with cancer is unique, sharing the journey with others can strengthen your spirit, broaden your knowledge and connect you with others who can help make the way less lonely and less fearsome. Cancer Lifeline provides a unique array of services to cancer patients and survivors, their family members, caregivers, friends and co-workers. Our programs are based on the vital needs of people living with cancer. We offer you choices and encourage you to take control. We provide information so that you can make better choices. We stress inclusion rather than isolation. And most of all, we provide the environment where you have the freedom to express feelings without being judged. People all over Washington State use the toll-free 24-Hour Lifeline program for emotional support and information. Those in the Puget Sound region can also take advantage of classes, programs and resources offered at Cancer Lifeline - Greenlake in Seattle.

Camp Trillium

http://www.camptrillium.com

Camp Trillium operates two sites in Ontario. Garratt's Island (since 1989), near Sandbanks Provincial Park in Picton, and Rainbow Lake (since 1997) in Waterford. Camp Trillium also travels to ten different Ontario cities, operating Day Camp programs in the summer. Throughout the year, Youth Groups and Trillium in the Community programs are offered in several major centres. More children than ever before are surviving childhood cancer; however, the devastation of their diagnosis and their treatments have major implications for the whole family. Camp Trillium has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception in 1984. It is apparent that the support and recreation we provide is truly necessary. Childhood cancer affects the whole family; therefore, our population includes: children on treatment, children off treatment, brothers and sisters of patients, bereaved siblings and parents.

Jacob's Heart

http://www.jacobsheart.org

We are a local, one-of-kind grassroots organization. Our support services extend to families with children under 18 diagnosed with cancer within the counties of Santa Cruz, San Benito and North Monterey. At just five years old, Jacob was diagnosed with cancer; in an instant life changed forever. Days learning and playing were replaced with weeks in the hospital enduring needle pokes and hours of cancer treatment. It all started with little Jacob and his family. In February of 1998, Jacob,s Heart was founded to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and support their families in the challenges they face. Jacob's Heart has now helped nearly 260 families by providing bilingual counseling & support groups, resource library & referrals, community education, arts programs, celebrations, and financial assistance. We reduce stress, provide comfort and practical support. We give families a place to feel at home. We are thrilled to report that Jacob,s treatment was a success! By the 3rd grade he was thriving, an excellent reader & a whiz at math flash cards. Now, at fourteen Jacob, our namesake, continues to be our role model for the power of support, hope, possibility and love.
