Welland Forge

http://www.wellandforge.com

Welland Forge was founded in 1965 by a group of four individuals that were previously employed at other forging plants in the Welland area. The operation consisted of four drop hammers at start up, employed 20 people and supplied forgings mainly to the automotive, and light and heavy truck markets. During the late 1960's, Welland Forge continued to grow and prosper. In early 1969, a decision was made to undertake a major expansion by adding four forging presses and a heat treat department. Financing for these projects was arranged through the Federal government under an assistance program for military contracts and the units were installed in late 1969. By early 1970, employment had risen to more than 100 people and Welland Forge was extremely busy on new contracts for the new presses. Unfortunately, the new contracts that were obtained were poorly priced and this, coupled with new technology and a heavy debt load, caused the company to declare bankruptcy in mid 1970. Welland Forge continued to operate under a court appointed receiver until a new buyer could be found and failing this, to dispose of the company's assets. During this period, Dominion Chain in Stratford, Ont. was operating a forge plant in St. Catharines called Canadian Warren Pink. A sister chain company, American Chain in York, Penn., also operated a forge plant in Bradock, Penn. Both of these forge facilities were antiquated and a decision was made to purchase Welland Forge and amalgamate all forging operations in Welland. An offer to purchase was made to the receiver subject to successful negotiation of a new collective agreement with the U.E. and the employees. Negotiations broke down and the employees of Welland Forge went on a legal strike in late 1970. The strike was settled after 5 months and Welland Forge was given a new life. Equipment and tooling was transferred to Welland Forge from the other two forge plants which were closed down. In 1979, the decision was made to invest in modern electric induction furnaces for the press shop. At this same time, the heat treat department was sold. Employment at this time was 245 people and the operation consisted of 11 hammers and 4 forge presses. In late 1979, the unionized employees went on a legal strike which was settled after five months. In 1983, the decision was made to invest in electric furnaces for the hammer shop and to reduce the number of hammers from 11 to 7. This was completed in 1985. In 1986, Welland Forge purchased certain assets from Dana Corporation's forge facility in St. Catharines which was closed down. In order to survive, Welland Forge has continued to invest in modern equipment and the facility today is considered to be world class. Approximately 65% of sales are exported to the United States, Mexico and Brazil. Current employment level is 95 people and the operation consists of 7 hammers and 5 forging presses.

Presrite Corporation

http://www.presrite.com

Presrite has always been a leader when it comes to forging. In fact, we've played a major role in turning this traditional method of metal-forming into a high-tech industry. For example, we forge complex parts such as gears to net and near-net specs, thus reducing or eliminating the need for finishing operations. We hold a patent for a forging process to produce multiple-flange track rollers used on crawler equipment. We also forge crane wheels and cluster gears; such parts were previously made on upsetters or by casting. Our three modern forge plants are ISO 9001 or TS 16949-registered and equipped with the latest design and engineering technologies. They also include a sophisticated metallurgical laboratory, and forging presses with up to 6,000 tons of capacity. With more than 500,000 square feet of manufacturing space, we have the capability to produce precision forged parts for a broad range of industries. Our customers range from the giants of industry to local shops. In every case, we've helped them cut their part costs while improving performance. Presrite is definitely not your typical "heat-it-and-beat-it" forge shop. We have expertise that others simply can't offer. In addition, we're continually developing new technologies to improve the parts we forge.

Hammond & Irving Inc

http://www.hammond-irving.com

Hammond & Irving, Inc. was founded by Charles M. Hammond and Robert M. Irving in 1919. Mr. Hammond was an expert hammers man from Crucible Steel in Syracuse, NY. He knew the quality craftsmen in the industry and arranged to hire several of the more talented ones on the East Coast. Mr. Irving, owner of a mill supply business, developed a strong local customer base. Early in the 1920's, Hammond & Irving, Inc. decided to break from the tradition of just serving a local area's needs, and concentrate on rings and forgings required mainly by the Machine Tool Industry. This foresight ensured the company continued success. Growth was slow but steady even during the depression years. As the company continued to expand, larger capacity hammers were acquired to facilitate our entrance into new markets. Originally, the company's operation was exclusively a "hammer shop," expanding from a few small steam hammers to nine hammers that covered a wide range of sizes and shapes. In the 1960's, the Germans developed a machine called a Ring Roller, which produced rings at a faster speed. The advantage of this Roller was that it was able to change measurements (set-up) in a matter of minutes rather than what previously took hours or even days. The company purchased a Ring Roller in the late 60's. Then during the 70's and 80's two hydraulic presses were acquired to replace the large hammers. In the 1990's Hammond & Irving continued its investment for the future. Many pieces of equipment were upgraded throughout the facility. The highlight was the commencing of a new radial axial ring roller in the spring of 1999. This new roller, a Wagner 63/63 RAW, is a world-class state-of-the art piece of equipment, which has allowed Hammond & Irving to manufacture a superior rolled ring. To continue our progress, Hammond & Irving has become registered to the IS0 9001-2000 Standard in November of 2003. We strive to be a leader in the rolled ring industry by continued investment in our people and technology.
