For over sixty years, WLPO has been serving listeners in the Illinois Valley. The station went on the air as a 250-watt non-directional daytime station and later increased to a 1000-watt directional daytime and 500-watt nighttime station. Because our station's power is directional, listeners in some communities may not be able to pick up its signal as well after dark and prior to sunrise. As a news/talk station, WLPO's focus is on happenings in the local area, news, talk and weather. Hot AC WAJK first aired as WLPO-FM in December 1964 as a 1000-watt monaural FM station. In 1979 the call letters were changed to WAJK. The station broadcasts in stereo and is a Class B1 FM signal. Weekdays you can tune into Spencer and Co. 6-10AM; Mid-Days with Clare 10A-2P; and afternoons with Shap 2-6P and 24/7 to hear your favorites of the 80s, 90s and now and keep up to date with Illinois Valley news/weather/events. WKOT was added to the group in 1999. The station's 60's, 70's and 80's Classic Hit format is popular among with listeners 35+. WEW 770 AM is the oldest radio station west of the Mississippi. The second oldest radio station in the country. It was officially licensed in April 1921, just weeks after KDKA Pittsburgh. It was put on the air and owned by St. Louis University for well over 40 years. Since then it has changed ownership several times and has been located in places like "The Hill", Busch Stadium, Soulard, and Clayton.
