The Gay and Lesbian Dominican Empowerment Organization (GALDE) was founded in November 2001. We seek to increase the political visibility of the Dominican LGBT community and to provide HIV/health awareness, educational and cultural activities. We intend to provide a safe space and essential human services to empower, educate and support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Dominicans. We seek to organize and advocate on behalf of the Dominican LGBT community in the political arena as well as combating homophobia through educational and social activities. We plan to integrate massive outreach and educational efforts to include the many members of our community to help them live better lives. GALDE is well known for organizing a large, community-based health fair every year for the past 17 years! In recent years this health fair has been held at Ft. Washington Park and attracted thousands of Washington Heights residents.

Safundi

http://www.safundi.com

Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies is a peer-reviewed, quarterly, academic journal founded in 1999 and now published in print and online by Routledge, a division of Taylor & Francis (UK). The journal is accredited by the South African Department of Education, and its editors participate in the American Studies Association's International Initiative. The Editorial Board believes that analyzing the two countries in an international, transnational, and/or comparative context enhances our perspective on each, individually. While new comparative research has formed the core of the journal, Safundi also publishes articles specifically addressing one country, provided the articles are of interest to an international or comparative audience. Furthermore, the journal's subject matter is as permeable as any country's border: the Editorial Board will consider research relating to other geographical regions in southern Africa and North America. Articles that Safundi publishes are academic in nature. Intelligent, exploratory essays are also welcomed.
