Next Step Theater Group

http://www.nextsteptheater.com

Next Step Theater was founded by a group of rookie actors who met in continuing education classes at a local community college. After a few successful performances, they had a wild idea to start a not-for-profit theater. They hired directors who would take extra time, show great patience, and continue their education by preparing these young actors for real shows. Those founders and directors have moved on, but their legacy remains. Each member comes to the organization at a different level, with varying degrees of skills and experience. As an ensemble, we continue to help each other take the "next step".

Eden Valley Enterprises

http://www.edenvalleyenterprises.org

Eden Valley Enterprises is dedicated to providing unique educational experiences. Our philosophy is that learning and doing are fun and our basic tool is theatre. While we specialize in living history programs, storytelling, and musical trips back in time, we are equally adept at other kinds of programs. From CANAL SONGS AND STORIES, a fun and informative program that features music and stories from the Ohio-Erie Canal, to DOCTOR PUTNAM'S MIRACLE MIXTURE, a vivid, high-spirited living history program, Eden Valley gives your audiences drama that brims with energy, humor, and fantasy and features a magical cast of characters. Johnnycake Village, our first project, was first produced in 1977 for the National Park Service at The Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. As an outdoor, living history program, Johnnycake Village re-created a mythical canal town as it might have existed on the Western Reserve during the 1800's. Visitors to the Village took part in major events in the building of our country as they became involved in debates over whether or not to build a canal, helped rescue a runaway slave or celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the State of Ohio. During its three summers, eight different scenarios were developed by EVE's director and 15 actors. Over 15,000 people relived history at the Village. MEET THE PEOPLE became our second show as a direct outgrowth of Johnnycake Village. Using the same techniques of Johnnycake Village, the first program in this series was THE OHIO PIONEERS for elementary school students. MEET THE PEOPLE has since become an umbrella title for all of our small touring shows including such titles as MEET MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE, YOU CAN'T PLAY BALL IN A SKIRT! etc. These shows have traveled quite extensively throughout the northeast Ohio area from Youngstown to Canal Fulton, Berea and Jefferson; and have been sponsored by diverse groups including Roscoe Village and the Western Reserve Historical Society. In addition to our living history programs, Eden Valley staff members are available for lectures and workshops in such areas as Ohio history, Canal history, and theatre. Eden Valley has also developed several murder mystery programs done in a similar style to the living history programs. These stories, done as dinner theatre programs or weekend events, allow the audience to become detectives and help solve the crime. The company has also produced special programs for a number of local organizations including The Health Museum of Cleveland, The Lorain County Metro Parks, North Coast Harbor, The Steamship William G. Mather, Roscoe Village, The Great Lakes Historical Society and the Western Reserve Historical Society. Eden Valley programs can focus on general groups or on age or gender specific groups from school children through seniors. Programs can range from being fully cast with actors, sets and props all the way to our simpler programs where absorbing stories are read aloud from our unique Big Book. Our flexibility allows meeting many different budgetary and timing needs. Though we primarily serve the Northeast Ohio region, we are available to staging performances in other locations -- ask us! As a non-profit corporation under Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code, Eden Valley accepts donations to help fund our educational programming. If you would like to make a donation, you can do this through PayPal. Donations are tax-deductible and gratefully accepted. To make a donation, simply click the button. Eden Valley is pleased to be associated with artistschair.com. Black Repertory Group Inc

http://www.blackrepertorygroup.com

The Black Repertory Group began its humble beginnings in 1954 when founder Nora Vaughn with the support of her beloved husband (co-founder) Briel L. Vaughn and the Downs Memorial United Methodist Church pastotial staff, openned the church doors to offer religious based theatrical views to the surrounding communities with the introduction of her innovative Drama Program. Today, the dream has become legacy. Over time Nora Vaughn and Briel L. Vaughn began to broaden the core porduct that the Black Repertory Group offered to the community by introducing Secular and Religious based Theatrical Arts and Artist. This push enabled the Black Repertory Group to take on an entirly new focus and direction. During our 42 year history we have evolved into an organization that provides an arena for expression and growth for established and up-coming African American Artist (keeping in line with the founders original desires to introduce the African American culture to the world of Theatre) as well as the theatrical views from all established and or up-coming Minority Artist. This has enabled the Black Repertory Group to deliver several cultural genre's to the surrounding community. Our slogan "Keepers of the Culture" has taken on an entirely new meaning. It was a message that the founder wanted the African American culture to understand why she started the repertory. She wanted to preserve the African American culture. Today, this slogan represents every culture and why we as a society and organization must preserve the culture through theatre. It also means that we have a responsibility to encourage and support our communities. To date we offer educational programs, leadership programs, mentoring programs, on-site classes, year round theatrical events and plays. Many of our community initiatives are designed to educated and develop the Youth , Young Adults and Adults of all ages within our community. This has allowed us to have two seperate but intertwined missions that have allowed The Black Repertory Group to become one of the Nations largest and oldest black owned and operated repertory's in the United States. Many of today's well now African Americans have either started their career or graced our stage some point their career in the our 42 year history.

Winneshiek Players Inc

http://www.winneshiekplayers.org

The Winneshiek Players, an organization of people devoted to the development and enjoyment of the theatre arts, had it's origins in 1916. On April 28th of that year a production of "Arms and the Man" was given in the Orpheum Theater, on North Chicago Avenue, for the benefit of The Associated Charities of Freeport. The cast included such familiar Freeport names as Scott, Knowlton, Steenrod, Trueblood, Rosenstiel and Reinhold, and they enjoyed the experience so much they decided to continue. One act plays were given in outdoor settings or in the basement of the Knowlton home at the corner of Stephenson and Locust streets, where a small theater was arranged. There were some public performances, but most productions were for the members' entertainment. As members moved away from Freeport, activity of the group declined. On April 28th, 1926, however, the Freeport Women's Club presented "Unimportant Inez," a three act comedy written by Donald L. Breed. This sparked a reorganization of the Winneshiek Players group, beginning with a meeting at the home of Mrs. Oscar Ennenga to adopt a constitution and by-laws. That meeting marked the beginning of the 75+ years we are now celebrating, during which The Winneshiek Players established a record which we believe makes it the nation's oldest, continuous amateur theatre. This remarkable continuity has been sustained entirely by the interest and financial support of the membership, and has been on an "amateur", or volunteer, basis. The first production of the new organization in 1926 was again an outdoor performance - "The Man Who Married a Dumb Wife", on the grounds of the Freeport Country Club - but in the fall the group rented a small theater known as the Bandbox, on the third floor of Emmert's drug store building on Stephenson Street. There were only 28 active members and 13 associates, but during the next year 12 productions were given, including two public performances at the Germania theater. Increasing membership caused the Players to relocate to the "Loft" on the third floor of the First National Bank building, with a 104-seat capacity. That was December, 1927, and the Loft was home for 9 years and 63 productions. One act plays gave way to longer works, including two musicals directed by Hez Diefenthaler in 1933 and 1934. Growth again prompted relocation, this time to their own theater, made possible by a gift of land at the present location from Robert F. Koenig. Public subscription and a small mortgage financed the original building, which cost $8700. The first production in the new theater was the revue "Continental Varieties" on April 14th, 1936. The lobby and additional backstage space were constructed about 1948, with some remodeling in the mid-'60's. Extensive remodeling was completed in the '80's and a new main curtain was dedicated to commemorate our 75th season. The years have seen hundreds of first-rate productions of comedy and drama, and "Little Mary Sunshine" in 1964 initiated the long-running practice of producing a major musical each season. Although incorporated as a membership organization, The Winneshiek Players strives to fulfill an obligation to bring the theatre arts to the community. If you wish to participate actively in a production, simply come to the public tryouts announced for each show. If you prefer to enjoy the show from the audience, we would love to welcome you as a member. After 81 years of activity, The Winneshiek Players are stronger than ever, thanks to your interest, and we look forward to more stimulating and rewarding theatre experiences in the future.

The People's Theater

http://www.thepeoplestheater.org

The People's Theater strives to be exactly what our name suggests: a theater for the people. Theater should bring people from all walks of life together to share a common unique experience. Unfortunately, theater is a dying art form in our generation because it has come to be known as a place for the elite and the elite only. The People's Theater dedicates itself to changing this stereotype by bringing theater back to all people and showing them what a magical place it can be. The People's Theater's goal of providing a rewarding theatrical experience to all people is first achieved by producing the highest quality of theater. The past, present, and future collide in an explosion of creativity at The People's Theater, as the organization commits itself to performing three mainstage productions in its first season: one classic, one new work by an up-and-coming playwright, and one timely modern classic that for one reason or another has not been produced frequently. Each of these productions will have a purpose in the world we all live in today. This does not mean that the plays must be done in a contemporary fashion, but rather that they must have a present impact on our current way of life, thereby ensuring the significance of the theater experience for all audience members. The People's Theater next achieves its goal of providing a rewarding theatrical experience to all people by charging affordable ticket prices. While Broadway and off-Broadway tickets cost up to $100 and $70 per ticket respectively, the ticket prices at The People's Theater will be equivalent to the cost of a movie ticket. In addition, The People's Theater provides student discounts and a rush policy for free tickets at every performance. Lower ticket prices enable a much larger and more diverse audience to have access to the high quality entertainment provided by The People's Theater. The People's Theater also achieves its goal of providing a rewarding theatrical experience to all people by getting young students to the theater. The organization passionately believes that since our youth represent the future of this nation and of the arts, every effort will be made to educate and nurture their interest in theater. The People's Theater will seek out and strongly encourage student groups to not only attend rehearsals and performances, but also to be involved in offering their thoughts and feedback to the artistic staff. Finally, The People's Theater achieves its goal of providing a rewarding experience to all people by opening doors to new, up-and-coming artists. The People's Theater always encourages any and all artists to submit their work and ideas to be considered for future seasons. The People's Theater provides such playwrights, directors, designers, and actors a supportive environment in which to bring their creations to life. The People's Theater is truly unique in that it wholeheartedly exists solely for the people. Unfortunately, to create a high quality theatrical experience costs a significant amount of money. In our first season, The People's Theater has a budget of over three hundred and thirty thousand dollars. However, by being a not-for-profit corporation, The People's Theater can find other means to create exciting, new theater that does not rely on expensive ticket sales. In this way, all people will have the opportunity to share in the magical experience at The People's Theater.
