  • The original law firm of Butler & Butler had its beginnings in 1928 in Clinton, North Carolina when Algernon L. Butler, Sr. completed his legal studies in Chapel Hill and joined the law firm founded by his father, George Edwin Butler. His brother, Edwin Elliot (Pete) Butler, later joined the firm and the brothers practiced for many years as Butler & Butler. Algernon Butler, Sr. would be active in the practice of law, politics, and civic life for the rest of his life. In 1959 he was nominated by President Eisenhower and confirmed as United States District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina, a position which he held until his death in 1978. The attorneys of Butler & Butler, L.L.P. have been serving the legal needs of clients throughout the state of North Carolina from their offices in Wilmington since Algernon L. Butler, Jr. received his law degree from the University of North Carolina in 1968. He has served on the panel of Chapter 7 trustees for the United States Bankruptcy Court since 1982, was a founding member of the Bankruptcy Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, and has served as its President. He served on the committee that established the guidelines and qualifications, and obtained approval of the North Carolina State Bar, for the certification of specialists in the field of bankruptcy law in North Carolina. Algernon L. Butler, III joined the firm in 1996 after completing his legal studies in Chapel Hill and having served as a law clerk for federal judges of both the United States District and Bankruptcy Courts in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is certified by the North Carolina Board of Legal Specialization as a specialist in the fields of both Consumer and Business Bankruptcy Law, has served as Director of the Bankruptcy Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, and serves on the panel of Chapter 7 trustees for the United States Bankruptcy Court.
