  • AIDA was founded in 1996 on the conviction that a coalition of non-profit legal organizations in the Americas would greatly strengthen the capacity of each to respond to the grave environmental threat posed by unrestrained economic activity and natural resource extraction. Now a growing, independent non-profit organization incorporated in California, AIDA combines the expertise of public interest environmental law organizations from nine countries of the hemisphere, and provides a forum for these groups to jointly design and apply solutions to shared environmental problems. AIDA's mission is to empower citizens to protect human health and the environment by developing and enforcing national and international environmental laws and mechanisms for citizen participation. Working on projects that fall into three general program areas, AIDA takes an action-oriented approach. Using international institutions and tribunals to expose flawed policies and initiate reform, AIDA combines legal work with efforts to empower and educate the communities we represent. To insure that all projects are based on sound science, AIDA also works with technical experts, and transfers needed information to NGOs, communities and governments throughout the hemisphere. We provide AIDA's services free of charge to organizations and communities battling environmental harm in the western hemisphere.
