The Division is primarily responsible for enforcing federal statutes and executive orders that prohibit unlawful discrimination. Since the Division was established in 1957, it has played an important and exciting role in the passage and enforcement of our nation's civil rights laws. The laws differ and prohibit discrimination on various bases, including race, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, citizenship, and disability.
