NLCHI was established by the provincial government to develop a health information network for the province. This network will link hospitals, health and community services, long term care facilities, doctors, pharmacists and other health care professionals. NLCHI partners with EDS Canada and a local consortium of companies, xwave, ZeddComm and Jane Helleur and Associates, on the project. NLCHI is also responsible for developing and promoting standards for health data, preparing and releasing health status and other information reports about the health system, promoting enhanced privacy and confidentiality policies in the health system, and maintaining the consumer health web portal, http://healthy.nf.ca.
